Replacing rear brake pads: What tool required to wind back pistons?

Featured Replies

Hi looking for a bit of advice.  Just got a warning on the MFD that my rear brake pads need replacing.  Never done them on this car but as the handbrake is on the rear I'm assuming it acts through the piston and so will need winding back to get the new pads in.  I've bodged this job on a number of cars previously but don't want to do that this time, much better to buy the correct tool for the job, can anybody advise what tool type is needed please?

As always any help greatly appreciated.

Plenty of windback tools available from various manufacturers/suppliers. I managed to get mine 15+ years ago from Halfords for about £20.

Draper, Sykes are branded examples.

Thanks Gav, I guess a standard kit should fit,  I had a look at a video online and it looks similar to ones I've done before.

It seems the rear pads don't have a sensor so I'm struggling to see how they can be the ones to be giving the error message so perhaps it is the fronts, bit of a surprise as I had those apart back at the end of September and they seemed to have plenty of material on them.

I've ordered some pads for both ends although I'm struggling to pin down what the fronts are as there does not appear to be a code on my car for them (should be 1LJ or 1LK as far as I can tell, neither exists), in the end I ordered both types and I'll just have to return the ones which don't fit.

The brake pad wear sensor is on the front inner brake pad only, passenger side on RHD UK cars.

Use this decoder to get the correct brake specifications, you'll need your VIN...

Hi Silver,  thanks for that info.

I got the wheel off last night and found that the pads were not too bad (as I'd expected from seeing them just a few months ago) and that the problem was that the cable going to the sensor had broken at the socket going to the brake pad, broken cable equals open circuit which the "brain" sees as sensor triggered.

I've simply crimped the wires together to cancel the alarm.

I think these wear sensors are pointless anyway. Any time they do trigger is just as likely to be a false positive due to issues in the system as it is to be due to brake pad wear, the only users they help are those who don't look after their vehicles and on this vehicle they are doubly pointless as they only monitor one wheel.
