Oil consumption

Featured Replies

Hi I am knew to this forum. Have a 2009  1.8tsi. Only done 60000 and now become yet another oil burner. Was a litre every 1100 miles which I could live with but after a recent service it dropped to 550 miles and last time the low level light came on after only 450 miles. It was on variable services and was only doing about 5000 miles a year until I bought it. I am doing over 10000 miles a year. Mainly a 15 mile commute each way on a 70mph road.

It has until now been run on 5w30 oil. Would changing to 5w40 help reduce consumption? Also any idea why it would suddenly start using so much more oil after a service(including oil change)

Thanks

Keith

5w/40 would help to reduce oil consumption as it will be thicker

but the fault lies with the engine design as you have worn piston rings - this is common with all 1.8 TSI engines across the VAG group

Different oil will help, but only to a certain amount.

A real solution would be replacing all affected parts. Quite expensive.. (Here in NL it will be an average cost of 2000 eur)

(It includes replacement pistons, piston rings, gaskets and seals). Lot of them will replace timing chain and tensioners as well, since the engine is stripped anyway

This is a very common problem with the 1.8 engines. Did you buy the car new? If you bought it recently, maybe there is still some kind of warranty.

Thanks for the reply. Bought it privately over a year ago so no warranty. May try the oil change to see if it slows the consumption down. It's a shame as I really like the car.
