Handbrake problems

Featured Replies

Drove the car this morning, and right from the off, when I released the handbrake, the release felt different. Didn't smell any burning untill we parked up at home - no smoke, but that acrid smell which you get from brake/clutch when something is wrong. The car was braking evenly though and there were no strange noises.

The rear discs and pads were changed at the MOT in November and it has done around 6000 miles since then.

Any ideas before I get my old gear on and look forward to another weekend playing around with the old beast - the car, not the missus:blush:

Did you note if any of the discs, or even wheels were particularly hot.

One hot wheel or one disc hotter than the others gives the clue to which one has the issue, at least.

I would say it sounds like a sticking pad. If it is this then the pad needs dressing :wondering:...............tidying up with a file around the lugs and applying some Ceratek grease. Copper grease will suffice if no Ceratek.

also try winding back the rear brake pistons to ensure they are not seized

Sticky rear caliper perhaps. Had the same on my Octy 2. Both replaced now.

^^^I misread, thinking new calipers had been fitted too...........................i'm getting old, Lol.

I've had all of my calipers replaced now over the last 5 years or so, so that is very likely..............
