Rough idle, rev hunting

Featured Replies

Hi all it's been a while since I've been on here. My current car a MK2 vRS, all was well until a month or two ago when the car began having idle issues after starting it cold or warm. Vagcom eventually showed a fault code of P2188 - Bank 1 system too rich at idle / intermittent. Now after researching this I found various possible issues and most people advised changing the high pressure fuel pump. So today I fit my brand new high pressure fuel pump and the issue went .... until I took the car for a drive and turned it off to check the oil, came back to the car started it and the rough idle was back with the revs jumping between 600-800 rpm. The only way to stop it from doing that is to rev the engine a little and suddenly all is normal again.

It's weird as both LTFT and STFT where way off previously suggesting the HPFP was to blame, I have looked at most vacuum hoses and cant see any cracked or ripped etc. I changed the sparkplugs and fuel filter around 2k miles ago, oil and oil filter today. Starting to think it's time to let a VAG specialist look at it as now it looks like I could be changing 100 things and not know exactly what it is.

Has anyone had an issue like this before, or something similar on the 1.4tsi with a resolution ?

Hi. I have same problem on my 1.2 htp 2010. Is intermittent and annoying. Last time it happened was 5 months ago so I'm not that bothered and fault goes away after while. I changed all fluids and filters and was still there. New plugs fitted same. Checked vacuum hoses ok.  I'm going to fit new set of coils when it happens again. Just waiting for it to happen so I can be sure the fix. I also fitted obd monitor so can be access via phone and when happened last time I could see variations in throttle. Dont really mean thats a problem. If you get to the bottom of that give me a shout. Cheers bro.

Lambda sensor maybe? I’m pretty sure I had this a few years ago and changing the lambda sorted it. Although mine said Bank 1 Sensor 2 which is after the cat.

Still can’t seem to find the culprit bro although, it seems to have gone away literally and no where near as bad as before the HPFP change, which I can sort of live with

I was thinking that but not sure tbh as now the car shows no faults on VCDS

Bit late but an update on this after running the new HPFP within a week the issue resolved itself, since then it’s never came back and the car runs perfect again 🙂
