Used Octavia DSG time - 2.0TDI or 1.5TSI

Featured Replies

Whilst I am tempted by the new Skoda Scala, for less money (c£16k or under) it looks like I could get a fairly new used Octy DSG etstate, with lowish mileage. Would you go for the 2.0TDI or the 1.5TSI?

Performance, economy and C02 look fairly similar, but it looks like the government really isn't diesels friend on other emissions.

My car tax renewal for my 09 Peugeot 308SW 2.0HDI has just come in at £290! Hence why I'm thinking a turbo petrol might be the way forward.

What are the pros and cons you've found of the the TDI or TSI DSG Otcy estate?

Torque.

If you tow, or are used to driving diesels, i.e. setting off and driving at a little over tick-over in 2nd, then the TSI engines can take some getting used to, as their driving dynamics are very different, they need more RPM so you need to change gear a little more often.

The higher purchase price of diesel engined Octavia's, and the higher price for diesel at the pumps means that you need to do some serious annual mileage to offset the extra costs versus petrol, close to 20,000 miles.

The 1.5 TSI is silky smooth and eerily quiet, it's a good engine (although check out the Karoq forum for some early issues with jerkiness).

Whilst the government are heavily taxing older diesels, a modern diesel is no more expensive to tax than similar output petrol engines.

Be sure to test drive them both, you'll soon know which one feels right.
