Castrol oil

Featured Replies

Hi all I have a 2006 octy 2.0 tdi pd with a bkd engine code (non-pdf I believe)

I have some old castrol oil lying around and am wondering if I could use it as top up oil in my octy. One is Magnatec 5w30 a1 and the other is Magnatec 5w30 c2.

according to castrol, the right oil for my car is Edge 5w30 ll, but can anyone tell me that the last two numbers/letters mean in each case, ie a1, c2 and ll?

What are the differences and would I be safe to use Magnatec 5w30 a1 or c2 as top up in my octy?

many thanks

Yep you engine is a non DPF unit (that is a good thing), although the you have is Castrol it is not suitable for your engine, Any decent branded oil meeting VW spec 505.1 to 507 will be suitable. The LL reference means long life oil which should only be used for veriable service regime. a1 oil i think is a BMW spec oil (maybe wrong) and C2 is general spec for ford or french cars.

Its important to use the correct specification of oil for a PD engine. It must say approved or meets specification 505.01 on the container, the .01 bit is very important, 505.00 oil is not suitable.

505.01 oil is specially formulated for PD engines with EP (extreme pressure) additives to protect the thin camlobes that actuate the PD injectors. Without this additive, the camshaft and PD injectors will likely suffer terminal wear in next to no time.

Oil and particularly the additives have a limited shelf life. Generally 5 years for sealed unopened containers.

Probably safer to use one litre of it as a top up in extremis than running with a low oil level, my TDi's have never used any oil between services so in your shoes I would not buy top up oil that I may not need, I would wait for the first oil change.

My MK1 would sometimes need a top up if I missed a service but by 250000 miles it was fully run in and consumed zero oil!

Thanks guys, I appreciate your feedback.

The car had a service done at 88k by Skoda in October last year. What oil would they have used?

The car has now done 91k and I was planning to do the next oil change towards at around 95k, if not a bit before.

In the meantime, I wanted to get a top up oil, so would Edge 5w30 LL be a good choice, or should I be looking at something else instead?

i don’t believe the car is using any oil (bought it in jan) but I will be going on holiday in a few weeks, which will involve many miles of driving, so wanted to get some top up oil to be on safe side

Either 507.00 or 505.01 vw spec oil will be fine for topping up but 505.01 is a better oil for PD engines without DPF  as it offers better protection for the cams.  If it doesn't say the above vw specs on the bottle don't use it to avoid premature wear on the cams.

Hi guys, 505.01 is 5w40 in the case of castrol, so should I stay away from this and stick with 507 which is 5w30?

No 5w40 (505.01) is fine to use - pretty sure all 505.01 oils are 5w40 spec as I haven't seen it in any other spec.

You can get 505.01 spec oil in 5w30. I use GM brand dexos 2 which meets VW 505.01 as well as 502.00, BMW, MB, GM specs

Here's a list of other oils that meet vw505.01 spec
