Swapping tyres around

Featured Replies

I moved my front tyres to the back today to even up the the wear as I like to buy a complete set of new tyres rather than two and two.

I noticed there was less brake pad left on the backs than the fronts but maybe they start off thinner.

The rear discs are not scored too badly compared with other I have seen on here but I did notice some vertical cracks developing. How they don't fall apart later!

I used my spare wheel to help change the tyres and found it had a 50kph on it. I thought if you had a full sized spare this wouldn't apply.

The marks on the rear disc look like where the brake pads have been touching it when on the handbrake.

Is the full size spare actually the same size tyre as the others? If not, it'll be limited to 50mph.

It's actually a smaller. My tyres are 215/55/17 and the spare is 205/55/16

I cannot see how that can be classed as full size.

It's "full size" because it's not a super skinny space saver ;)

These are usually 125/80 and you really wouldn't want to take a corner at more than 50mph due to a lack of lateral grip.

Just as an FYI, I would never swap worn tyres to the rear of the car.  It's always best to keep a greater amount of tread on the rear of the car.

If the tyre sizes are the same from to back, what I'd actually do is get the new tyres fitted to replace the worn fronts, and then swap around, so end result you have new tyres on the back, and old rear tyres now on the front.

Those rear discs are certainly a lot cleaner than most I've seen and even the brake hub is looking exceptionally clean and rust free .  Have you painted the hubs ?

No, it's kept in a garage and only done 14,000 miles

I want to swap manufacturers and I like to put the same make of tyre all the way round.

Fair enough ... mind you I've seen hubs on new showroom stuff looking worse than yours ;)

Those hubs do look great, worthy of Porn Hub.

That's a terrific name for a wheel fans' website - I'll just check if the domain name is available.

Oh....:o:o:o
