Problem with misfire & dealership

Featured Replies

Hi All,

(Apologies if this was supposed to be posted somewhere else, or there is a thread on it)

My MKII Fabia vRS (13 plate, 61k) has been misfiring for quite some time. In November I had to have skoda assist out to tow me home due to a complete loss of power, and if I remember rightly they changed one of the spark plugs or injectors (apologies I'm not very car savvy as you can tell).

The same problem is happening again and I booked it in for today. This morning I went to the dealer for them to investigate the issue, only for them to tell me there is an error code popping up, however as they don't know which cylinder it is, they can not justify changing the whole coil pack and spark plugs under my used car warranty, so I have left having the technician tell me 'I've just swapped them over so if it goes again I'll know which one it is'.

What would you advise I do about this? I'm concerned that the misfiring part is still in there, and they have done nothing about it. I don't know too much about the ins and outs as you can tell, and as a newbie any help would be massively appreciated.

Thanks.

So have they at least replaced all 4 spark plugs after removing them all and checking them?

*What they need to do under the warranty is get someone that knows what they are doing and then get what ever is needed to make the car fit for purpose.

So they need to stop wasting your time and their time and get value for money and the required parts after a trained and qualified technician diagnosis the fault,

gets permission from the warranty provider and then repair the car.*

If there are enough misfires to log a fault code then odd that he / she does not know which cylinder.

Thanks for your response.

To my knowledge and memory (I don't have the invoice of the work done in November to hand) they changed the one faulty plug/injector, and left the other 3.

The misfire is intermittent and only comes on occasionally, but the technician this morning has acknowledged a fault code is coming up.

Are they entitled to refuse to change all 4 as they cant justify it under my used car warranty?

Thanks again.

What servicing of the cars have you had done?

You need to pay to service your car as required.   Every fault is not a Warranty Claim.

Preventative Servicing and maintenance is required.

If it needs spark plugs every 10,000 miles, or 15,000 then change the plugs.

They do not last 40,000 miles, or 1 plug probably does not.

You really need to know what was done last time, what parts replaced if any, and not just switching ignition coils about.

If an Injector was replaced you should have an invoice showing that, same with spark plugs.

Ask for it.

Car was serviced at 51k, now on 61k, plug last changed at 57k. Full service history.

The tech needs to whip out all 4 plugs, & check them.

Maybe an Ignition coil is on the way out, maybe 1 spark plug already.

Then after that if still a misfire they need to see what is causing it.

There can be a timing chain issue with CTHE's and there is a TPI on that.

The Timing chain will need checked maybe.

Okay, I'll give them a call after work and advise I'm not happy with the outcome, as the car is not fit for purpose, and request all 4 plugs are checked instead of just switching ignition coils around. I'll update with what they come back with, I've found they often try to deter from doing warranty work in my experience.

Thanks for all your help

Update: Called Skoda and mentioned the above points.

Dealership manager informed me that the technician had "switched cylinder 2 and 3 as it was not clear where the misfire was coming from and the misfire had only occurred on 2 occasions, sometimes errors don't stare you right in the face" He then told me procedure is to do this before changing the coil pack etc., I stated I am not happy as they have acknowledged there is an error and not rectified it, and it is still misfiring.

He has booked me in to take it there on Friday (again) to 'have a look'.

Does that sound right or are they trying to cut corners?
