Rear window design fault?

I've only had my Vrs a month or so, and the last couple of days we have had heavy rain. This morning when i went to the car, it had stopped raining, but there was significant water still all over the car. I opened the boot, and the change in angle, and movement, made water run down off the back window. This then proceeded to drip off the drainage edge of the rear window between the glass and the bodywork and drip straight into the boot, rather than the channels either side. Has anyone else noticed this? And is it just a design fault? Or am i just missing something?

Its a feature of the car, to help....... something.... :)

 

Mk1s  are the same. 

 

Some people put a bead of clear silicone along the bottom edge channel of the glass to stop water pooling there.

 

After a while you learn to be patient - open the boot about a 3rd to 1/2 way, count to 5 while it drains off into the frame of the boot opening and then push it the whole way up ;)

 

(My insignia also did the same thing, its a "flaw" with probably all /most lift-back saloon cars.

Opening the boot a little and waiting for the worse to drain works well :)

Another "water feature" of the Octavia Hatchback is if you have the boot open for along long period with heavy rain, e.g. loading a lot of shopping during a downpour etc, the water gathers in the number plate recess and ****es all over your legs and shoes when you close the boot!

 

You'll only do that once or twice before remembering it!

Havnt had the number plate shower yet...

Havnt ever experienced it in 14 years of MK1 and MK2 ownership, my vehicle never gets polished and is washed maybe twice a year, could this be a problem that only affects clean and waxed vehicles?

No, @J.R., its (bad?)  luck really. Could be theres enough "petina" as the shed finders say built up in the frame to stop it getting filled up

Just been out into the boot in the rain and cannot even see how it could happen, perhaps I have misunderstood the description, when the (close to) vertical section of my tailgate opens fully and the top becomes the lowest part any water runs down and to the sides and drips into the area outboard of the tailgate seal and then down to the rear bumper.

 

Even in a downpour any running straight down would fall into the same area but at the top horizontal part and never get into the boot, indeed many is the time that I have sat under the tailgate to shelter from a thunderstorm.

 

So what bit have I misunderstood?

 

Do you mean the water gathers at the bottom of the glass between it and the metalwork? The MK1 had a proper screen rubber, the MK2 its just plonked on glazing sealant so there is a gap behind but mine will probably be full of algae.

This. My FL mk 1 had no rubber seal... 

So, what happens is when it the boot is about 1/2 way open, the water runs into the channel and out to edges of the window, but due to alignment, the water falls into the boot...

So would this "channel" be where the top (when closed) edge of the rear screen sits under the projecting metalwork which houses the high level brake light?

 

I'm struggling with this and you lot have got me going out to the car in the rain several times, the long and short of it is the tailgate is bigger than the hole behind it into the cabin, by about 4" all round, no matter what open position it is in any water running off it will always fall into the channel outside of the rubber seal and run down and out over the rear bumper, I have sat under thunderstorms and not a drip comes through.

 

Is the saloon perhaps different?

Yeah this only effects the hatch/saloon ;)

If only you knew how many times I was out in the rain last night opening the tailgate 😧

That's pretty much how it works.

Keeping a coating of Rain-X or similar on the glass and the paint waxed will get rid of a lot of the water before opening the hatch.

 

Some people have filled the grove at the base of the window with silicone but I don't like that idea.
