Squeal when engine cranks?

Featured Replies

Another issue!

Just noticed today that as you start the engine, there is a high pitched squeal for a split second as the engine cranks. Only noticed it as I had the window down.

Worth noting my DMF is on the way out as it is rattling quite a bit.

Is this connected?

This car seems to like to throw big bills!!

There is no squealing once the car has started by the way.

Split second as it starts to crank or while cranking?

If the former then a knackered one way clutch on the pre-engaged starter can make that noise.

I'm sure it has only started today to be honest. I've had the windows down all week and not noticed and given the flywheel rattle, I'm quite focussed on any new noises.

I think it squeals for maybe a second. I'll have to test it and try again. After the first time it did it, I couldn't reproduce it again until it did it a couple of times in a row this afternoon.

Disconnect the multi-plug for the injectors so you can crank it for a good long time to decide at what point it squeals, I have the same engine and with their quick start feature the engine has usually fired up before you can hear it cranking.

This forum or Youtube is your friend for finding and disconnecting the plug, dead easy when you have seen it done, I could not even see or find the thing on my own.

RH end of the cylinder head, pull out a red coloured locking tang then grip and rotate the outside anti-clockwise, its a very positive action to remove and replace.

Before trying the above, I have tried just cranking normally and it makes the squeal for the duration of time before the engine actually starts. So whilst the engine is actually cranking.
