Car written off not long after egr replacement

Featured Replies

Well the skoda Octavia was written off last week not long after spending the best part of £750 having the egr valve replaced

Looking at my replacement options I dont want a replacement diesel with all the issues with egr and dpf issues

Would like a petrol engine with an auto box that gives decent fuel economy

That leads me to a petrol hybrid and as skoda dont make one yet I am going to get a new Toyota Corolla sport touring for my next cab

Retail at £26k there is a firm that is providing them new for just under £20k

So o this will probably be my last post on here. Nice chatting with you all

Holy cow they are expensive over there.

Basic Corolla hatch with hybrid is ~$29k drive away here.  That's ~GBP15k.  Sure Sport + Touring would be more but not that much...

The uk is one of the most expensive places to buy brand new cars, you could buy a car with a list price of £20k, then add VAT at 20% so thats now £22k, then first registration fee which is about £100 then first year "roadtax" which is banded depending on CO2 per kilometer from £0-up into the £1000s. Not forgetting the interest and fees on the finance pack.

I never buy new, always be used as it's much kinder to the pocket.

Your VAT and freight costs from Japan would be the killer.

We only get the Corolla Hatch here.  Entry level Ascent Sport Hybrid CVT in plain white is AUD29500  (just under GBP16k)  drive away, add AUD 500 for metalic paint, add AUD1000 for satnav, Dab+ & rear privacy glass.

Off that (approximations)

Dealer delivery (you pay for them to put swirl marks in the paint) $1500

Federal GST 10% AUD2700

State gov't stamp duty 2% $520

State government registration $300

Compulsory Third Party Personal insurance (for injury to other people in an accident) $600

And a few other taxes that would be around $200

Mid range SX hybrid is $32100 drive away

Top range ZR hybrid sporty looking number is $35700.

That model has only recently been released so by 2020 they'll be 5%-105 cheaper.

Cross the Irish sea and try to buy a new car....

Corolla sport tourer Luna (entry) spec... €28,420... £24800 and im not sure if thats inc vrt, delivery, etc.  As it was a very quick google on the phone and toyotas mobile site is terrible.

An Octavia diesel in low spec is about the same..

No did a 3 week tour from Dublin down to Cork and Killarney (yes I kissed the stone) most Pubs seemed to charge quite a lot more than the UK and fuel was expensive then as well. Not working there I didn't benefit from the higher wages you guys enjoy?:giggle:

Higher wages and higher tax..

Also...

Cork - expensive... because large city

Killarney - expensive... because tourists..

Anyway.. drifting back in the direction of topic.. i did notice the new 2019 Camry is coming back to Ireland...

The Lexus GS never sold well over here so Toyota have changed the name to the ES made it slightly cheaper because it's based on the Camry's floorplan/running gear and gets the 2.5litre 4 cylinder petrol engine with hybrid electric motor and awful screaming CVT box. Can't see BMW, Audi, Merc customers forming an orderly queue unless tempted by lower company car tax. Back on topic nicely.:tongueout:

BMW, Audi & Merc car renters are maybe not the market that Nissan are looking for, or maybe actually they are as their company accounts pull in the purse strings.

Screaming CVT's will not be an issue, but then those that are not 2 pedal fans will spin noise about some older vehicles instead of trying the new ones and seeing just what they are like.
