Water/cooling pumps, one or two?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just looking for a simple answer really. The MK2 VRS facelift. CCZA / TSI / EA888 has two water / cooling pumps?

One that needs the timing chain off to replace and another pump that can be accessed near the inlet manifold?

Is one or both an apparent lifetime part?

Thanks!

According to some on line pages, the electric second pump is to maintain coolant flow of warm coolant into the heater core when the engine is idling. The main cooling pump is to cool the engine by circulation of coolant through the the radiator.

For the secondary pump I am not sure if this is the only reason or if it is true, but you know other on line forums are not as reliable as this one!

I've not replaced either. But have read a few posts on them. The electric pump v51 is described as a after run circulation pump in the training self study material.  Which is electric, as the engine will not be operating.its operation is controlled by the engine mgt system.

the main pump is mechanical drive. Off a drive gear off the timing system. It is replaceable but is difficult to get to and I would say may well require the inlet manifold off. It is a combined thermostat, pump in an integrated housing.

I havent seen either described as for life and there a fair few posts of the main pump being replaced due to leaking, amongst other things.
