Michelin Primacy 3 in 225/45R17 would be a quiet and long lasting tyre if not the cheapest option. We have 18" alloys on our Karoq with these tyres and as you live in the Garden county Kent you don't need Cross Climates or even a full winter tyre. Good luck on your search.

Thank you for your quick reply . Peter

2 ways of looking at this, if you have chosen the 4x4 is it because

  a) you want to use off road, and/or on slippery or snowy roads

  b) have a high power car and want to avoid wheelspin

For a) going to be better with M+S (mud and snow) or 3PMSF (3 peak mountain snowflake) rated tyres (all seasons, or winters)

For b) going to be better with summer road tyres

For the 17 inch what size tyres are you proposing, some are available in certain sizes but not others, can't really make any suggestions without knowing what you are aiming at

Depends on age and engine (and brake size) , but 225/50 R17 and 205/55 R 17 might be possible

For a) maybe Goodyear all season contact or Michelin Cross climate +

For b) maybe Continental Premium contact 6 or Michelin Pilot sport 4

I will definitely not be using the car for off roading, I drive these cars daily in my job . The only reason I wanted a 4x4 is if in the winter the roads get slippery I want something that will go in a straight line. I had a 4 motion Bora 2:8 litre v6 petrol and that was fantastic in the snow with all weather tyres . Where I live in Kent touch wood we hardly have trouble with really deep snow. Peter

The tyre reviews show that a two wheel drive is better than a four wheel drive if it is fitted with all seasons tyres. So it seems to me that if you want better winter traction in slippery conditions , go for all seasons tyres. Unless you intend to have two sets of wheels and tyres?

Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen2 (https://www.goodyear.eu/en_gb/consumer/tires/vector_4seasons_gen-2.VEC4SEASG2.html) or Michelin CrossClimate+ (https://www.michelin.co.uk/auto/tyres/crossclimate-plus)

My parents have had CrossClimates on all their vehicles for the last couple of years (Saab 9-3 Convertible, Jetta 2.0 TDI and now a C-RV). They got caught out last year in Suffolk on a small break. It snowed heavily and the roads out of the village they were in had to be ploughed. They drove straight out through deepish snow and small hills without drama. Not as solid as a full winter they first ran but enough to get them out of the bad stuff at slow speed and out to the main roads.

I had their Jetta whilst between cars in the summer at high 20°C temperatures. Apart from a little bit of squish when really pressing on and the odd bit of tyre squeal, you couldn't really tell it wasn't a regular summer tyre.

We have older family down in Kent and so my mum visits from Essex regularly and it gives her more confidence in the winter.

My wife has recently taken on running a site in Crowborough in East Sussex. We'll be fitting her Yeti with Vector 4Seasons later in the year as they get alot of ice and more snow up there. Don't want her getting stuck at work!

If you are a Costco member they are doing Vector 4Seasons in 225/50/17 for £100 a corner at the moment vs £125 at BlackCircles.

If you don't want an AllSeason tyre then look at the recently updated Primacy 4 which has a different tread design to provide the same braking performance at new as it does at 2mm.
