[Problem] Immobilizer fault -Cluster remove

Featured Replies

Hello!

I'm just new here, I don't know if this post is in the right place, but I'm looking for some help.

So. Today I just did a mistake with my 2004 Skoda Fabia 1.2. I've tried to replace the cluster with one from a scrap car just because mine had a dead speaker and was in miles insted of kilometers.

I had no ideea that the immobilizer was involved in this action. After I swap the cluster to car simply won't start. (The engine was on for only 1 second and after that turned off automatically). Durring this the Immobilizer fault icon appeard in the Dashbord.

So far so bad... searching for some answer on the internet having no ideea about mechanic and vehicles in general and found things like "has to be recoded".

I took it off, I put my old one back, same problem. Flashing immobilizer fault.

Things I have tried:

1. Keep the key in the position "on" for 15 minutes. Turn off and the try to start it. Fail.

2. Lock the car, unlock the car from the driver door, try to start the engine witin 15 seconds. Fail.

3. Turn the key in the door to unlock position and keep it for 30 seconds and then try to start the engine. Fail.

4, Remove the battery for 5 minutes. Plug it back and start the engine. Fail.

Things I'm not able to do:

1. I have only 1 key and there is no spare key at all.

2. I know that immobilizer has no connection with the remote lock/unlock, but anyway the buttons are not working at all since the key was damaged.

Any ideas - how to start the car?

I had to leave the car far away and I don't have acces for the moment but I'l try to apply all the solutions you suggest.

I might get also a Diagnostic Scanner Delphi 2015R3 if that help.

Thank you in advance!

Sometimes the connections at the cluster plugs don't work properly when they've been disturbed. I'd take the plugs back off, spray some contact cleaner on the the plugs and cluster sockets and try again.

All right. I'll try this aswell, thank you!

No problem :)

Same thing happened to mine after I had my cluster out. It's been fine ever since I sprayed the connections. The green connector is the one that has the immobiliser connections.

Numbers 1 and 17...

Any chance to bypass it with 1 and 17 like here?

If I manage to start engine first I'll try to remove the speaker from the one I bought from the scrap yard and after that if is still not working, I'll try get one from ebay. Thank you for your suggestion!

^ OK :)

If what I suggested doesn't work, it's possible that you have disturbed a weak solder joint as they are known for this problem.

This pic shows the two immobiliser solder joints which can sometimes need reflowing with a soldering iron...

I've seen this on YouTube. And I don't think that this is the problem. This seems to be a problem that appears overtime. I just removed the cluster, replace it for 2 minutes with another one and put the old one back.

It's just something to check if it still doesn't work after you've done the other stuff. The solder joint/s could have already been weak and may have been disturbed by removing the connector. It's probably not that but worth bearing in mind. Let us know how you get on.

All right. Problem solved. Manage to start the ignition!

Solution: Removed the cluster again, I forgot to take cleaner spray with me but I just blow in the green connector and in the cluster socket, plug and play. That's it.  Was easy fix.

As a small detail, now I got another fault that I don't care anymore about it. Airbag-seatbelt system fault. I'll try later with the Diagnosis to check what's the problem.

Thank you TMB for your promt answer!

No probs, glad it's working now :) The cluster connections seem to be somewhat hit-and-miss if disturbed. That's what I've found anyway.
