Wider tyres on Neptune Alloys

Featured Replies

I recently noticed a police Octavia mk2 FL VRS had 235/40/18 tyres and wonder what the reason would be to fit Non-standard tyres. Looked at a number of technical sites on wider tyres which say 235 is the widest one can go on 7.5j rims.

Has anyone here used 235s on the 18” Neptune alloys. What’s your experience? How would you say they differ in handling & performance?

I asked the same question back in February

Hi Goldfinger,

Thanks for your heads up on that. Had a look through but didn't see a conclusion as such.

Did you decide to go for any larger tyre in the end.I've read so much and it goes from don't do it because your tyres will blow, come of the rim, cause you to skid, right through to 'had no problems at all'.

Biskoda is an excellent place. The community, like these unusually good cars from Czech Republic, is exceptional,

Sorry for the late reply, I've still got the 225/40/18 Bridgestones on at the moment but I'm thinking of getting some new alloys, 8" X 18 or 8.5" x 18 and then I'll go to 235/40/18 tyres.  I'm just deciding which wheels to buy. I might even go to 19" rims but I think the 245 rides better on 18's. ( opens can of worms )

Unless something has changed, 225/40r18 is the widest 40 series tyre you can fit to a 7.5" rim (based on manufacturers recommendations).  A 235/45r18 is fine.

I'm really surprised a police car would fit a non-standard size as I doubt it's been tested and approved and the speedo calibration would change.

I used to supply tyres to our local police and I fitted a size bigger once and had strips torn off my by the Regional Commander.  The only reason I didn't get black-balled was that they hadn't told me I couldn't do it and I did the best wheel alignments in the area.  The fact that the tyres I fitted were "better" didn't cut it as they hadn't been tested and approved by the department that wrote the vehicle specification.
