Changing Gear DSG

Featured Replies

Could you all tell me at what revs does your DSG gearbox change up (normal gentle driving) from 1 to 2 and then to 3 please.

Mine seems to hang a fair bit before changing up. Too long in my opinion.

What engine? What driving mode?

My 110kW TDI with 7 speed DSG definitely doesn’t stick in a gear too long in normal driving mode when driving gently. The first one is used just to move you from standing. On others it upshifts around 2000 +/- 50 RPM. I’m in 3rd gear at 30 kmph already.

Check that you havent inadvertently switched to sport ddive by 'flicking' the gear lever whilst in D position. You can toggle between D and S by pulling back on the lever.

Thanks for the comments. It's a 2.0 Tdi 150.

Definitely not in sport mode as this is an ongoing thing I've noticed.

Think I must still be getting used to automatic as I've not driven too many in the past.

Mine does change around 2k ish so that sounds about right then.

Need to start accepting that the car thinks it knows best as to when to change gear with how much throttle is applied.

Thanks guys.

My 280 with 6speed dsg will change up at 2k.

Gentle driving in "D" will see it change up at c1,800rpm from first through to third (car is MY17 with analogue dials, so just an estimate). In 'S" it will hold on to the gear until c2,200rpm for the same gentle driving. Sounds like yours is fine:thumbup:

ETA: the change is so smooth in mine as to be all but unnoticeable.

Is this constant? Ie. When up to normal operating temps? Mine hangs on a little bit longer when the engine (and in turn the gearbox) is stone cold. Mine is a TSI engine but oil is oil in the gearbox regardless of engine type.

With a TDI, the DSG can hold onto gears when the DPF is going to regenerate - holding the revs higher.

Same warm or cold for my TDI. As noted by adamjackdrew it can hold gears longer when regenerating  - I guess its about keeping the temps up?

I suppose here as good a place as any, recently got back from a long tour round Wales. Mostly in eco mode

(190 TDI dsg) on 2 occasions whilst gently accelerating up a long steep hill there was a clunk, a coil light came on and was in limp mode. Pulling over and restarting cleared it immediately. Don't think it's anything to worry about but posting on here anyway. I'm guessing as it was low rev under strain of the hill and I gently asked for a little more it said sod that rather than dropping to 5th. Any thoughts?

Something very wrong there,

Not a characteristic or designed in feature by the engineers, it is a fault.  The Dealership employees should not say, 'they all do that', because only ones with a fault would.

I'd certainly have it looked at. This is what the manual (confusing as usual) says.

I think it means there is a problem with the glow plug system if the light doesn't come on before start or stays on continuously when driving. Just my guess though.

The "page 44" reference is just to their usual don't drive if the warning tells you not to, pull over safely etc.

Thanks Jeff

It is still under warranty, though I'm unsure if it's covered. I'll give them a bell this week then.

Sorry for stealing this thread.

I went to an independent for advice, printouts attached. Gobbledygook to me but he said to show it to the garage I bought it (Arnold Clark) and if no joy a Skoda dealership. He said it should be under warranty "but you know what they're like"

Calling Skoda Assist would have been 'Simply Clever', said you were concerned, got a responder out.

Only go to Arnold Clark if that Dealership is part of the Skoda Dealership network, some are, Approved Repairers.

Arnold Clark Group Dealerships know that a Warranty Claim is with Skoda so don't let them mess.

They might well have the College, train the techs, have all the gear etc, that does not mean Jack Sh-!t really with Arnold Clark though.

Well DM Keith have had it today, and are keeping it until Monday.

They read it and did some diagnostic tests and some anomalies were found however no real fault as such. It was taken out to try and replicate the scenario but was ok.

Tech guy thinks it might be an intermittent fault with a boost sensor but is checking with technical later.

In the meantime I have an 18 plate 2.0 Octavia dsg.....

Whilst there's nothing wrong with it per se I am so appreciative of my car for comfort, smoothness and lack of noise.

@muddyboots similar to yours in that no real provable fault was found, however a boost sensor was suspected so after advice from technical they said they changed it, taken for trial runs and no faults found.
