Cost of replacement ignition key - disgusted

Featured Replies

Misplaced my spare ignition key. Phoned dealer for cost of replacement. £98 for key plus £69 to code it. I will refrain from repeating my reaction. I am disgusted and appalled.

Other than tearing my house apart is there an alternative please.

Key insurance?

A decent auto-locksmith should be able to help but it might be a similar price.

Thanks for responding. Will ask my Insurance company.

I got a non remote key cut for my son's polo about 3 years ago it was £60 all in by a mobile car locksmith , so ring round you should be able to have it done for much less than the dealer is quoting

Thanks for responding. Asked my Insurance company and am not covered. My key is a zapper. Just going to have to bite  the bullet and get one from dealer. Just know that after I do my old one will turn up.

Panic over. Taken all day to find the safe place I had put the spare. Still not happy at how much a replacement costs, but there isn't a lot you can do. Dealers have you by the short and curlies.

It's not a simple key though is it. It has electronics that need syncing to the car, it has multiple parts and it has to be cut. It has to have inventory management and has to be delivered etc etc

If the £98 was a full flip key with remote locking I'd be biting their hand off.

Dealers are there to make money and they make most of their money in after sales not the car itself. It's hardly surprising.

Which bit where you more shocked by? Cost of the key or the coding?

Both. More so the coding. At the end of the day I'll put this behind me.

Car in for five year service tomorrow. Am I cynical in wondering what they will find wrong with a car that's done genuine less than 18000 miles. Wait and see.

I had one done with a mobile auto electrician last week.  £120 all in, that included deleting the key that is still in the possession of the last owner.

Don’t buy a Superb with Kessy then, wish it was that cheap!!!

I threw my key out in the rubbish, by the time I realised, the bin men had been.

£300 for a new kessy key with remote fob. That was trade price and I coded it in myself.

It still grips my **** now thinking about it. May as well have just set they cash alight.

Wow

Irrelevant now you've found  the spare

But another option, take  the immobiliser chip out the key you have and tape/stick  it next to the steering lock.

Then just go to Asda and get a key cut for £5 or so.

Alot of dealers will deduct £200 or so if you only got 1 key when trading in, you just need to be one step ahead of them  😁😁😁
