Noise when downshifting at low RPM in DSG

Featured Replies

Hey folks,

I have been reading on the website for a while now, since having bought my first Skoda Superb MK2 DSG in august last year, and I have mostly used the website for guidance on how to replace a range of minor electrical wear and tear things (bulbs, ABS sensor and wiper engine)... While the driving experience has been great so far, I did notice a noisy click developing in/near the DSG6 gearbox the last few thousand miles.     The first time I heard it was in March, but it did not worry me as it only happened a few times.....Recently when I was on holiday on the continent, the frequency and volume of the noise increased, and appeared to come from the gearbox area, and took it to a local SKODA garage for inspection.  They said a loose air filter struggled with resonance at a certain RPM and then caused the click (sounds unlikely)..They fixed the box and claimed the noise was gone...well, it was not :-(

The noise I hear is noticeable from inside the car, driving at relative low RPM 1000-1500 , in D (drive, but not in S)   when the gearbox automatically lowers gears in slowing down city traffic....initially it was some sort of a click, but recently it has become louder...It does not happen when going into higher gears, nor when slowing down in S mode. It is loudest when going from 4th to 3rd gear, and I can manually provoke it when changing gears with the "tiptronic (or whatever it is called) function.   I do not see any lights on the dashboard and the perfomance is not affected AFAIK.  The car does not vibrate when changing gears.

The car has 135k miles, and the DSG has been serviced 20k miles ago.  During the holiday I did hear (and recorded on video) a rattle underneath the car after starting the car, likely associated with a worn DMF when engine was running in P, but now about 1500miles later that sound has disappeared.   I wonder now if replacing the DMF will fix the clicking noise, or whether something else is going on.   What do you guys reckon?

I have booked the car in at SKODA garage in Aberdeen for a diagnosis tomorrow, but since the other garage diagnosed it wrong, I am hesitant to believe the first thing they say.  Any ideas what may be the cause?  Is it DMF, or perhaps a worn clutch (which is apparently very unlikely with this gearbox)

Cheerio,

Walter

Welcome.

If you can i would see about taking your car to the Victoria Garage in Maud and not Skoda Specialist Cars Aberdeen, John Clark Group.

Could it be worn inner CV joints and they are clanging when being unloaded and then loaded again? A few people on the Octavia forum have had it.

I suspect the rattle on startup is something else. Mine can be a bit noisy when first starting before it's all warmed up

I am not sure how CV joints would cause such a selective issue...wouldn't they play up in all gear changes?  I do suspect an engage/disengage issue somewhere too.

Though the CV joints could explain wheel vibration I feel over 75mph on both winter and summer wheels/tyres.

@Skoffski: Maud is a little to far, too much hassle involved getting there and back.  Is there any particular reason I should go there instead?

@Derecho

The reason to travel there is that you will get a diagnosis and a repair and pay a fair price.

Sadly unlikely in Aberdeen where you are taking the car.

Maybe give them a call.

@Skoffski:  You were surely right about the fair price issue with Skoda Aberdeen!  Purely for diagnosing they asked 108£, for 1.5 man hours...I kindly declined and popped in at my local garage on the way home...We went for a 10min test ride, and concluded the DMF is not causing the issue, since the rattle I hear at a cold start disappears after driving.

The mechanic managed to reproduce the noise easily, and noticed it was relatively loud at low RPM, while it became quieter while shifting manually at higher RPM.  He thought this is a typical sound for a DSG gearbox, and that I should monitor it...He also advised that I have a DSG oil change, for sake of knowing it was done.  I will contact Maud garage in due course. Thanks for the tip.

PS: in the end the local mechanic charged me 3 £ in total, for replacing a broken daylight bulb 🙂
