In short , will replacing the plastic wheel nut covers with real metal ones alter the balance of the wheels ?

 

I guess not if all 4 wheels are the same

No because they are so near the centre of the car and the weight difference minimal.  Difference of Ooo or Ahhh.

Each wheel should have 4 bolts the same and a security bolt that is an ickle bigger / heavier then the other 4.

So you need 16 covers of the same size and 4 to fit the security bolts.

Metal wheel nut covers. I've not heard of those before, how are they held on? What about corrosion?
