Car / motorbike etc. Noise Pollution ? Should this be part of MOT etc? Government / Ministry of Transport regulations. Legal limits

Featured Replies

In Australia it seems the EPA (noise) limits don’t apply to Harley’s.   It’s as if they have a special trademark privilege.

What would happen too the likes of Milltek .http://www.millteksport.com/

Maybe another increase in Policing workload . The public having an Apple Dba meter  /on their mobile / photo of car etc. registration

Compliance  , a bit like monitoring hand held use of phones in car / lorries ...… etc.

Reporting your supercar neighbour.

With regard to "should this be part of the MOT etc."

It already is, albeit on a subjective measure:

8.1 Noise

8.1.1 Noise suppression system

You must inspect:

  • exhaust silencers
  • under-bonnet noise deadening material fitted as original equipment – you don't need to inspect this for Class 3 vehicles

You must use your judgement to assess exhaust noise:

  • during the emissions test for the vehicle
  • rev the engine to around 2,500rpm or half the maximum engine speed if this is lower on vehicles not subject to an emissions test

Exhaust noise from the vehicle must not be unreasonably above the noise level you'd expect from a similar vehicle with a standard silencer in average condition.

"catch those who rev cars or motorcycle engines beyond legal limits"

I didn't know there were any legal limits to rpm?
