Octavia estate Mk 2 (2012) 1.6 TDI EGR

Featured Replies

Hey everyone,

I'm new here and have an issue with my car going onto limp mode intermittently.

Although he issue is intermittent the car usually goes into limp mode at some point during each trip.

It all started straight after I got m car back from a major service and has been getting slightly worse each day.

The symptoms of this are that you feel a very slight hesitation and then the coil light starts flashing.

I've done a scan with my cheap Bluetooth OBD2 reader and it's showing codes P0407 and P046C -

 P0407 = EGR sensor B, Circuit low

P046C = Powertrain.

I've read that the EGR getting gummed up and sticking is quite common on the 1.6 TDI.

Also that its an expensive job as the EGR is located in the most inaccessible place ever!

My question is, where should I start with this?

I'm happy to attempt to clean the EGR myself or even replace it myself but I'm not sure how to get to the EGR without removing the subframe and driveshafts.

Does anyone know if there is a way to access the EGR and spray it?

I've attached a screenshot of the errors found.

Thanks in advance.

It is lot of work from below the car to get to the bits and you also need height i.e. a post lift if possible.

Skoda main dealers can charge a total price of around £1600 for replacement; independents from around £1k.

There are spray cleaners but read this thread in another forum first which also talk about why garages charge 4.5 hours labour to change the EGR:

How many miles has the car covered and what type of journeys?

Has your car had the software fix? If not sure look in the spare wheel well for a sticker starting with 23. If so, Skoda will pay the cost of replacement for up to two years from the date on the sticker under their Trust Building Measures.

Incidentally, I have exactly the same car as you and I refused the fix.

Hey @pikpilot, thanks for your reply.

I feared that it was located behind the engine, I Iwould be able to do it myself if it was on top.

I've only done 62k, I only drive about 10 miles each day around town during the week and take it for longer runs at the weekends (motorway driving).

I didn't respond to Skoda's letters about the software fix as it caused issues on my friends car.

In desperation I had a carbon clean done with nitrogen and it has definitely made an improvement, however it's hesitating at least once per trip (sometimes sending it in to limp mode and sometimes not)

I'm waiting for my mechanic to get back to me with the book time but like you said it's going be be around the 4.5 hours mark.

Although it would be uncomfortable with small ramps I'm tempted to replace the EGR myself as I've seen some videos where they replaced it without removing the driveshaft.

As you're only on 62k, it might worth clearing the fault code (if it'll stay off) and popping into a Skoda dealer to get the emissions fix applied.

When the code comes back, go back to the dealer and insist they replace the EGR under the TBM. It's certainly worked for other people :)

You say it started after a service I know coincidence happens but I would check to see if everything was put back as it should have been.

Thanks @langers2k, you are a genius!!! It seems to be more prone to going into limp mode when the engine is cold so I could book it in and then reset it just before I get there.

Hey @seriesdriver, thanks for your message, I was thinking exactly the same thing.

I got the car delivered back to me late in the evening and when I left for the airport at 4am I was in limp mode all the way there.

Since the issues started I've been driving at higher revs as it hesitates when crusing at 2 - 2.5k rpm.

That's a great idea to check everything that would have been looked at.

I had a major service so I'll check the deisel filter and air filter.

Thanks for the heads-up, I'll bear that in mind.

I don't think there is anything on this account which can identify who I really am ( it's a mystery)

Thanks again, I really appreciate everyone's help 😁
