2002 Octavia vRS Tyres

Featured Replies

Hello Guys.

I purchased a pair of tyres (Continentals) and was advised that i needed 'Extra Load' Tyres.

I have since been into my boot and noticed that my original un-used ever (Conti) Spare does not have an Extra Load Tyre.

Could anyone kindly advise me which tyre i am supposed to have?

Many thanks, Andy.

Given your location you'd do well to pop down to Merityre in Thame to see Briskoda member Phil (piv34uk). He's your local tyre guru.

Personally I dont see why you'd need "extra load tyres"

It is starting to seem that i was given the wrong advice, ("Dont worry Sir, luckily we have a pair of those on the shelf") thus being diddled out of a few extra quid.

Out of interest, what where the tyres they sold you ?

I was sold a pair of ' Continental Contisport Contact 205/50R17 93W Extra Load' tyres. The manager advised me that these were the correct tyres for my car.

I do not think that these tyres are going to be dangerous or affect the handling but i cant help but feel that i have been over-sold. Maybe the estate version of the vRS has extra load tyres and he made a genuine mistake.

Have a read of The Wheel & Tyre Bible for an explanation of tyre ratings. The tyres on my 4X4 Estate are 91W - ie they have a max load of 615kg at speeds under 130mph, and a max speed capability of 168mph. Your 93W have a max load of 650kg. The 4X4 Estate weighs more than the vRS - 1940kg v 1810kg - but the latter has a higher top speed which might just need to be reflected in 93 the load rating. Whatever, 93W gives you a wide margin of safety.

Sorry it is a bit late, but generally "extra load" is for estates or towing vehicles. It gives a stiffer sidewall. Just because you may only want an estate for asthetic reasons, somebody somewhere may want to fill it up with carpet samples and tow a horsebox!

Michy Premacy work well.

Hi

Has anyone been told the wall of the original tyres go mis-shaped?

I was told this by my local dealer and have a distinct rumble from the tyres:confused:

would be interested to hear other owners experiences.

cheers

IS it the done thing to put 225/45/17 on the vRS 17" rims.

I'm sure I read this it gives better grip somewhere...?

Its mainly because the 225 combination is cheaper:D and they fill the arches better...

It's not unknown for tyres to distort, but normally only if they are left parked without moving for literally months or years at a stretch. Even a regular shuffle from one part of a dealer/importer stockyard to another would be enough to prevent it.

Which tyres are you running, what tread do they have left?

I'm in need of new rear tyres very soon. What are my best option for value but also quality? My service is also due so I don't want a huge bill at the end of the month :)

Shame you arent closer as Im close to throwing 2 perfectly good Continental tyres in the skip.

Sneeks, define "value". I can make a recommendation for make and supplier, but it would mean a trip to Dumbarton. OTOH they (5 fitters, 1 customer) did a 4-wheel change and balance in 15 minutes.

Any brand of tyre will do, a budget of around

I will let you know over the next few days. If you can arrange collection theyre yours if I cant shift em.
