Rusty liquid from Rear Washer Jets

Featured Replies

Last couple of times my washer bottle fluid level has got low I've had thick brown rusty goo coming out of the rear washer jets all over the back window. (Mk 11 Hatch Back)

Now I know the obvious answer is don't let the washer fluid get low then' But where is the rust coming from?

It's got a plastic bottle so is the pipe from front to rear made of steel and the likely culprit or is there another part likely to blame?

I'm guessing if something in the system is rusting then at some point its going to fail altogether so I would like to have a look at it now if I can.

Thanks

I'd pop the pump out of the bottle and flush it through.

Id go with the seal on the rear washer/wiper failing.

Is the pressure less than it used to be?

You might even be getting a puddle in the boot or see water leaking out if you hold the jets down for a prolonged period of time?

Thinking about it logically I think it is the wiper motor. If it was in the bottle then it would also be coming out the fronts too.

Had a quick look at it yesterday but didn't have much time. The bottle had plenty of water in it, and only needed a bit to fill it up.

Front washers are working completely clean the back one was struggling and squirting orange rusty water again. I took the jets off the wiper blade and worked the switch. It had good pressure and shot thick orange water up into the air for several seconds before it started running clear.

Unless there is an additional pump in the back (which I doubt) as well as the one in the front bottle, then the rear wiper motor would appear to make sense. Anyone know if these are  serviceable or will I need to order a new one?

Thanks

As already suggested, it will be the rear wiper motor / mechanism.

The washer fluid feed to the rear window passes through the motor and they are notorious for leaking, which ultimately results in contamination of the washer fluid.

The operation of the rear wiper motor is on borrowed time, you are about to experience the widely seen 'wiper stuck halfway across the rear screen' syndrome that affects too many VAG models...

Interesting reading Silver, thanks for the link. Notice Mike had put a part number in the 1st thread. I quote ' Part number now is S1Z5 995 711D for the hatch '

I thought IZ5 was the estate version of the Octavia so is the wiper motor the same on Estate & Hatchback?

Also is there a newer part number for the hatchback? Don't want to be buying old stock due to all the known problems and revisions I've read about in the threads.

Thanks

Cancelled as of 2014 so probably superseded from this

Looks like a backwards supersession.

Perhaps the suffix D one was too reliable, income stream drying up? :wondering:
