Tomtom or Garmin

Featured Replies

Hi

folks which sat nav make is best and more accurate?.  I'm looking at Tomtom start 25/52 and Garmin drivesmart LMT-S 50

I have always gone for Tom Tom as they have good maps and up dates regularly. I would personally go for a mid range one that is WiFi connected etc and free map updates . My one at present has WiFi ,  Bluetooth, free maps updates etc. I then have brodit fixings in my two cars so I can change over at a drop of a hat . Garmin I used a works one and it was not as easy to use and mapping was not too good either. Do a search for offers and deals around it pays .

I have a Tomtom Start 20 which is a few years old but previously I owned a Garmin. What I liked about the Garmin was the preview of the route in written directions. The Tomtom shows a map which is not so detailed.

Waze + Google Maps + 5-7" smartphone

Prefer tom tom on smartphone to waze. The smartphone is much faster than my tom tom sat nav  though maybe that depends on phone. You can tap the direction arrow at the top of the screen and it shows you the route as a list and you can tap anything on the list to see a preview of that direction. The phone app is licensed year by year, my experience of the sat navs I've owned is that the battery fails after a few years or the unit refuses to start or updated maps no longer fit in the available memory which makes them quite pricey per year. After using on a phone for a few years I'd never go back to a dedicated unit.

IMO it really is a personal thing..........

I have owned a Tom Tom Go520 and it has been good for around 10 years before (funnily enough) having a screen fault just as Tom Tom are discontinuing it's updates. Although as mentioned, I did replace the battery twice.

I started with a Palm (work supplied in 2005) with similar maps to TT. This did frustrate me a little until I got used to using it daily. I had to buy my own eventually and liked the square design and looks of the Garmin so purchased a mid range one. Couldn't get on with the difference in maps and directions and so swapped it for the Go520.

I looked into getting another one but new job and not visiting different addresses daily around the midlands so not needed anymore. For now at least.......the new job ain't great as I work alongside a Trump act-alike.........Dictator that behaves like a little girl..........
