Handbrake floppy

Featured Replies

Some may remember I popped a few airbags jumping over a kerb unexpectedly last month. Now I’m onto the handbrake repair....

The handbrake is floppy, where’s my first port of call to check it out?

Don’t know how many miles you have on the clock but high mileage may suggest snapped cable to one or both of the callipers, do you feel any resistance at all?

A cable end may have disconnected from the calliper or drone the rear of the handbrake lever. The adjuster nut may have come undone.

Is it that it won’t hold on the ratchet? If so, pull on the button slightly once you have the lever pulled up to get it to engage the pawl with the ratchet. Don’t pull too hard though as the button may ping out and hit the Columbus screen.

I think it’s just the cable come off the rear calliper on the side I hit the kerb.

Is this a simple job to reconnect it?

Even with the lever down you may need to slacken off the adjuster to give enough slack in the cable to get it back on, or turn the cam to assist fitting. That must have been one hell of a whack for that to pop off, never seen that happen before.

It could be that something snagged the cable and ripped it off, in which case check the calliper hasn’t been damaged. Is the ball still on the end of the cable?
