Spark plug change

Featured Replies

Hi,

I was reading a topic about failure of plugs in the 1.4 tsi vrs.

I recently changed my plugs, around 39k,  I can see from history of the car these are the original ones.

Thought I'd add my pics for your inspection and thoughts.

I'm old school so will be changing them more often,  along with the oil etc.

I also fitted a new coil pack as quite cheap and new leads.

Superchip remap booked. Then 288 vrs upgrade next.

Thanks Mark

Don't wish to disappoint, but that photo is of a 1.2tsi 85 or 105ps engine with aftermarket plug leads.

It is neither a 1.4 nor a VRS

Plugs in that engine are good for over 60k miles, (iridium tip, platinum ground), we ran one set to 86k and still in good condition.

Have another glance at what he wrote. He didn't claim it was either.

Lots of oil on one of the plugs threads......

I usually find that no.3 plug runs hotter than the rest (colouration of thread indicates excessive heating)

1 and 3 wear faster than 2 and 4 due, Im guessing to the waste spark design where spark plugs fire in pairs (1 and 4, 2 and 3) and one plug gets a positive voltage spark and the other a negative spark so direction of current/electron  flow is opposite.

But he did seem to imply he is remapping it in the hope of making it into a 288ps VRS!

I think he meant 288 mm vRS brakes.

:D I didn't read that line at all!

I think Tech1e's nailed that one.

Thank-you for your replies.

Sorry if the wrong impression was given.

I went to M Tech near Gillingham Dorset, they did the Superchip last week.  Mid range is so much better.

Much more tractable.  I'm pleased with the results.

With regard the oil on the plugs, yes it was noticed,  no obvious signs of leaks on the engine.  Something that Paul at M Tech suggested was use only OE oil filters as these have a non return valve in them so oil is not released when filter is changed.  So from this, maybe the when the filter changed with an aftermarket item oil was spilt.

Next plan is to fit the 288 mm vrs brakes.  Just to clear up that statement.

Thanks Mark

Might as well go for 312mm it going to the trouble of new hubs.
