starts but won't stop

Featured Replies

Started the car this evening. Battery light stayed on engine starts, I drove the car 50 yards then turned the key to switch off the engine. Engine did not stop, removed the key from ignition, engine would not stop.

Reversed car starting place and stalled it.

Tried to start it.

Battery light came on and whirring noise from starter motor and no ignition.

Removed the key from ignition and battery light still on so disconnected battery, Measured voltage across battery with negative removed at 12.7V.

In winter the car gives this whirring noise and does not start for 5-10 attempts, think it is a soldered joint somewhere in the instrument cluster from searching.

Any ideas what it is this time.

Check the fuse box on top of the battery for melting terminal.

Fuses are ok visually, no damage.

Last winter the car struggled to start. Whirring noise when turning the key, this suggests starter motor. Problem disappears in spring and summer.

Ignitions switch switches on and off  lights and wipers ok.

Inability to stop the car suggests faulty solenoid? and that it cannot be restarted suggests something is not resetting itself.

Choices are auto electrician for diagnosis or remove the starter motor?

Auto spark to have a look.

Probably right.

Removed the starter motor and tested it on a bench, works fine. so between ignition and starter motor is a lose wire.

Wouldn’t be a starter motor issue if it doesn’t stop.

Sounds more like an ignition switch to me

Engine run away as its commonly known (engine continues to turn over when ignition is turned off) is more likely to happen with diesel engines however it can happen with petrol engines too.

The most likely cause is a hotspot in the combustion chamber from a build up of carbon deposit.

What you could try is a engine carbon clean, there are mobile mechanics that can do it for you.

Started the car on the key.

Turned the key off, engine still runs. Depress clutch and engage reverse and engine stops. Engine restarts on the key.

Rad fans switch on with ignition off and then switch off for five seconds before coming on again, repeatedly.

Intermittent fault with dash lights stay on: Immobiliser, ABS, traction control after stopping car by stalling.

ECU connection or fault.

Halls electrical here i come.

Fan control unit was the fault.

Got it back from Halls, now the front wipers sweep 1.1/4 times when the ignition switch is turned on and then stop.

Can get an intermitment action or 1.3/4 sweeps and the high speed is now  the stop button.

Checked the relay, WD40 on the stalk, not the rear wiper leaking water.

Any suggestions or wild guesses prior to return to Halls.

age?

A wrong connection?
