Horrendous cabin noise on sharp bumps

Featured Replies

Thanks for taking the time.

My wife drives a 19 plate Octavia 1.0 tech. She is first owner.

It is in generaly a great car but my major problem with it is the absolutely horrendous noise it makes when hitting a sharp bump. The first time it happened I stopped the car to inspect it for damage. It was on my normal route so knew the "lie of the land" and pressumed I had it something or a pothole had deteriorated but no it was just the cars "normal" response to sharp bumps. On rough ground or rolling bumps the suspension is fantastic.

Is this normal ?

In a word... Yes.

Has been discussed a fair bit and people have tried quite a few different things to help.  @JohnnyType2 has probably gone the furthest with a full internal strip and covering of sound damping material.

The issue is mainly due to the lightweight nature of the MQB platform and skoda penny pinching on the sound proofing while trying to maximise the space available.  The rear suspension design on the lower power versions is torsion beam and this contributes to the noise.  With a small engine you have one of the lightest models which may not help either.

Some methods that people have tried:

- Sound damping material

- Inserts in the spear wheel well

- Bolt on vibration dampers

- New shocks

- Different size, pressure and/or model of tyres

I have tried shocks and tyres.  Both have helped.  Next step is to try bolt on dampers but there is a trick to finding the best place to fix them.

I would suggest your first stop is tyre pressures and then dealer as you r car so new.

Have a read of the various links (two below for you to be going on with) regarding transport blocks being left in place. These should be removed by the dealer at the PDI but this is not always done.

Have to agree with MarkyG82, my Octavia has to be the worse car I've had for noise.

Would have expected the above reply by MarkyG82 to address the issue of general road noise, but horrendous noise when hitting a sharp bump?  I've never experienced this, in fact the exact opposite.

Issue sounds exactly like my expreience of driving Ford cars, especially ones with stiffened suspension like Zetec. No doubting their handling on all road surfaces was one of the best mainstream cars I've driven, but there's a price to pay for the stiffer suspension. On many occasion hitting a pothole would take me by surprise just like the OP describes. Never once experienced anything like this in my Octavia nor have I read about it. The car in question is a 1.0 tech, not 19" rims VRs.

Something sounds very wrong, I'd take it back to the dealer to check.

I do not get a horrendous noise on bumps. The removal of transport blocks should be checked first.

My combi is pretty quiet and passengers comment on that.

Slow down when approaching sharp bumps with passengers on board. 😉

I can't tell if my passengers are commenting or not in my combi. I can see their mouths move but road noise too loud.   I do wish my reply was tongue-in-cheek, but I'm deadly serious.

😀

To the OP check for those front transport blocks, the symptoms you describe classicly match previous reports where they were found.

Our 1.4tsi estate is pretty quiet and conversations with rear passengers easier than in other cars we have owned.

The noise from the 16 inch spacesaver tyre is horrendous when fitted so I think the apparent contradictions are explanable.
