Random cylinder misfire

Featured Replies

Hi this is my first post and would love some advice.

I bought my MK2 fabia vrs about a year ago and have now gone through 6 coil packs and completely melted the tip off a spark plug - cylinder 1.

Recently On hard acceleration I get a flashing engine management light and an engine splutter. Ease off the accelerator and the light subsides and all back to normal, engine fine. plugging in at a mates garage showed a cylinder 1 misfire so I replaced the coil pack, seemed fine until I drove about 50 miles then the same issue, hard acceleration, light flashes and spluttering, ease off the throttle, hey presto fine again. The live data now shows “random cylinder misfire” not just cylinder 1. Somebody please bloody help me or I’m gonna change the plugs for sticks of dynamite, then tell me I’ve got a cylinder misfire I dare you damn computer.

Anything good advice from anybody is appreciated.

Many thanks

Thank you I’ll let you know what they say 😊

Is your car burning oil? How old is it? Some of the original oil spray nozzles are culprits of this, bad spray pattern coaking oil on the plugs.

Well I noticed we were burning a lot of oil up until I started having these problems. I check the oil regularly because of the amount I used to go through but seems to have levelled off of late.

The car is 13 plate WL13 ***.

I noticed yesterday that I had flattened a few of the fins on the intercooler when I used my jet wash. Not a lot of em just a handful on two spots. Could this be the problem relating to cooling although the temp gauge rises as the car gets warm but never ever gets above halfway.

Thank you for your reply 😊

Looks like you might need the oil fixes, with the CAVD Oil Jets being the main fix, along with the breather pipe. Dealers wont just take your word for it even if you are out of warranty. You have to do the Oil Consumption test first. These are the part numbers below.  CAVE / CTHE no matter all are a lottery on whether they need this oil fix.

Skoda will update the ECU but your car will feel detuned a little.

I was down at 173BHP after the fixes so got custom mapped@ADE Tuning - All has been good since. I was burning 0.5L every 300 miles. Now i make it every service without topping up (5K miles per year)

Thanks for being so detailed and helpful. Who should I take this to (the problem) a roadside garage or Skoda. Thanks again 😊

I would honestly go Skoda first but ask them if their engineers are used to working on the MK2 VRS fixes, some will be better at it or had more experience than others, there are TPIs on the issue & that's what they work too, starting with an oil consumption test'.... My hunch is you need them fixes...

Head off, Check valves and cylinders for damage......All the tell tale signs of a damaged cylinder/valve there.

Also not a cheap fix unless you have warranty.

Compression check would be the way to go. Think they should be around 130-140?

A hefty read but its all related :

Early CTHE have the things to consider like there was / is a software update.

There is the possible Timing Chain issue.  TPI's covering this.    Has anything been done up to 2016 or since.

Then there is the Water Pump that will be needing doing in the not distance future possibly.

The messing about with Ignition Coils was quite likely a waste of time if one plug had one coil failing prematurely.

I recently returned a 2011 mk2 vrs which displayed random cylinder misfires across all four cylinders within a week of ownership (see my post about electric/engine issues) Still waiting to find out the issue but it needed engine stripping and at that point after some wasted time investigating spark and coils I handed it back for a full refund.

None of these cars will be scrapped or fixed by Skoda or 2nd Hand Dealership, faults will be cleared by 'engineers' and then the next unsuspecting customer can purchase.

What was the REG of car handed back? There should be blacklist of known rejected turkeys (for customers who have recently purchased from garages) - not everyone reads car forums every day but at least when they do the REG would pop up

Thank you all for your help and advice i have never used a forum before and have found this to be full of useful information and very useful experience.

I have booked the car in for the compression test and I have also told em about checking the timing chain and water pump, i dont know whether this is possible or can be done but said about the advice I’ve had anyway.

I’ll post the results

cheers 😁

Good luck. A cylinder leakage test would also be worthwhile. Mine showed leakage on one of the cylinders as I recall, a sure sign of mechanical issues.

Once I find out from them the cause of the issues happy to share that info as appropriate on my post.

They told me today "The car is still being investigated, we suspect a faulty valve is sticking open causing the miss fire!

Will need further investigation i.e the cylinder head will need to come off to confirm 100%"

@RioVrS

What has your car a CAVE or CTHE engine and when was it first registered?

How many miles has it done?

?

Why has it gone through 6 ignition coils, and who has been fitting those?

EDIT.

PS , OK i see it is a 13 plate. so CTHE.

????

Has it had a software update to your knowledge.

You will need the timing chain measurement done.

Well the car isn’t under warranty so I took it to a mates garage who put it on the computer, came out as cylinder one misfire (November 2018). Changed all 4 as was advised to but as they were on the shelf anyway he only charged me for  the one. The car was running fine. Then EPC and engine management light again and limp mode (feb 2019). Called AA this time as I was away,  Cylinder 1 misfire so checked plugs and had burned the tip completely off cylinder 1 plug. Changed plugs but not iridium as I wasn’t advised to by the AA guy and he also changed coil pack for cyl 1. Cars running fine again. In fact running great engine sounds superb. Then end of last month flashing engine management light again and splitter but only under hard revs and hard acceleration. So took back to my mate, he drove with the computer on, live data and yet again cylinder 1 misfire, Changed coil pack cyl 1 drove about 50 miles tried to overtake on M4 light on again engine spluttering. But soon as light goes out the car seems fine again. Obvs not tho🙄

Will the wrong plugs cause this as Halfords gave them to me they checked against numberplate but I didn’t,?

We have done 50,000 miles and I don’t think it’s had an update where would I fine this out?? Thanks again ☺️

Also sorry to be a pain but what’s the software update for and how do I get it done. Also cost and what if I don’t get it done, is this my problem (or could it be I mean). Cheers again

Find out what plugs are in.

I suggest you get DENSO plugs but get the NGK or Bosch if you want.

Set to 0.7

Then see how things are.

In Limp mode 2 cylinders can shut down, or the turbo disable.

Possibly you need the water pump / magnetic supercharger clutch replaced.
