vRS Suspension ~ Totally confused!

Featured Replies

So having driven my recent vRS purchase for some weeks now and gaining more trust in the lovely motor, I have decided to spend some hard earned cash on her.

Firstly I have changed all the filters and done an oil change with Millers EE Nano longlife 5w-30 runs lovely!

So next up..... I have decided I cant afford to rinse my bank account but need to replace some tired suspension components, so I have ordered a new set of SKF top mounts and some Eibach springs which will lower it slightly and hopefully improve road holding things a bit. Thinking of some heavy duty console bushes at the same time.

I am going to get my mechanic to do this work for me as I simply don't have the time. When I booked it in with my mechanic he said it would be a further improvement to change the shocks as well. So I did some research as I was thinking OE like for like shocks to just refresh would be the simplest and budget option.

Found Bilstein B4s @ Demon Tweeks very reasonable, however it says these are not suitable for a vRS. I phoned the chap up at DT and he looked it up and did indeed confirm I would need Bilstein B8s ....now yes lovely but the price! I could have got coil overs!

So excuse the ramblings is there a decent budget replacement shock for the vRS which wont empty the bank account?? Euro Car Parts have got Sachs specced for vRS sports suspension but I am unsure what an Eibach / Sachs ride will be like, or should I just have the work done and get the last out of the old OE shocks car is on 151,000.

or are Bilstein B4s suitable who made the original OE stock shocks and whats the spec?

Cheers Paul

First up, good idea on the service, longlife oil isn't really the best for the PD130 though, better off with the fully synth 5w-40 PD oil especially given the mileage.

Secondly, any new damper will feel better than an OE damper that has done 150K and is 10+ years old. I have used the Sachs dampers from ECP and they are a good quality OE replacement. Top mounts (hopefully complete with bearings) is a very wise idea, ARB drop links wouldn't be a bad idea while you are there either. On Eibachs standard ones will be fine, ECP sell TRW ones which are OE spec and will last.

Console bushes, I am still a huge fan of the solid Cupra ones, cheaper than poly alternatives and they just don't fail.

That’s Brill cheers, The cupra console bushes sounds like a great treat for it. I’ll consider the Sachs over the B4s.

👍🏻

I along with many other have used Bilstein B4 on the VRS and they are fine, I also have the Eibach Pro spring kit.

I would recommend this setup if you want a very close to standard comfort level with slightly sportier handling.

The other good thing if you want to improve the handling is a rear anti-roll bar, I consider it one of the best upgrades to do to a Mk1 VRS.

Cheers Duck yep there’s a bit of a difference in cost even between the Sachs and The B4 )

£33.60 from demon tweeks

Sachs from Euro are £70+ even with the discount codes I’ll have a ponder 🤔

£70 for the pair for the front, I thought that was reasonable. Not saying Bilstein ain’t good though, not the quality they once were however.

Got a full set of  Sachs on order and some drop links from Euro.

MiD 60 code brings it all down to a more palatable price!

Just need some Cupra console bushes and a New dog bone bush now, can you recommend any good places for decent bushes?

This list is growing daily 🤪....shhhhh best not tell the missus!

Briskoda parts is a fair place to start for Cupra console bushes.
