Travel to EU - beam adaptor ?

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I am going to drive from UK to EU continent soon and wondering what can I do with beams to not to dazzle oncoming drivers.

Does Skoda Kodiaq (TDI SE) have anything to correct its beams or do I have to buy something like https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B007T7SIRO/ (not sure if that is suitable for Kodiaq ...) ?

Thank you in advance.

In the infotainment lighting section there is an option for right or left driving, UK is default right I think, only stumbled across this a week or so ago, perhaps a more learned briskodian can confirm. I am still learning the ins and outs of the vast array of menu's and sub menu's

You are correct your SEL with LED headlights has this function, unfortunately the OP has an SE which has basic halogen headlights that will require stick on beam deflectors.

Thanks @Kenny R should have read the OP post before trying to be smart 😂

The reflectors in the link are correct, but knowing where to stick them is a bit of an art form. In days of yore there would be a definite area on the headlamp lenses that required covering, but lately it seems to be a bit of guesswork.

My advice would be to take the deflectors with you but don't apply them unless you intend driving in very low light or at night. Years ago the authorities could see if you didn't have deflectors fitted, but in modern times they won't know whether you can change the beam direction from inside the car, so unless you dazzle a police car, you'll be fine.

I'm in no way suggesting that you break the law, just be practical and use your common sense.

Not sure if it's an option on Kodiaq, when on my last Roadtrip through France and Spain I set my beams to 'flat' and just left them that way.

The vehicle has passed 5 Mot's with no comments about poor lighting .

You'll just have to follow the instructions that come with the deflectors then.

It is rumoured that there is a lever on the inside of the Kodiaq's halogens that flat beam them, therefore removing the need for stick-on beam deflectors.

What Kodiaq models have halogens ? I have SE - does it have halogens ?

Surely you would know?

Simple way to tell, do you have a level adjustment control inside the car?

Yes, the SE has halogens.

LED headlights are standard from SE L upwards.

The DRL's (Daytime Running Lights) are in with the front fog lights on Kodiaq's with halogens. On models with LED headlights the DRL's are in the main headlight housing.

If you have the beam adjuster switch inside then just turn it down to minimum.

Else turn the beams down a bit under the bonnet. I’ve successfully turned my bike headlamp down a bit for foreign travel and never had any trouble. No stick on nonsense to decrease the light output.

I'd avoid adjusting the headlights from under the bonnet, fine for lowering them, but when it comes to setting them back for driving on the left you'll need to have them properly aligned to get them right, a half a turn is the difference between dazzling or not.

Some French gendarmerie can be finicky too, simply adjusting the headlights down to their lowest setting using the dash adjuster and not being able to prove you've done it properly might cause some headaches at the side of the autoroute.

Not sure about the Kodiaq halogens, but I seem to recall in the past that Skoda projector headlights used to have a lever near the bulb holder, that you could move to another position and that would remove the LH kickup and make it a flat beam suitable for driving abroad.

Perhaps buried somewhere in the user manual?

Mentioned earlier in this thread, and in the linked thread above, but not confirmed.

Nothing obvious in the workshop manual...

I’ve had a halogen headlamp out and did not see any lever for LHD setting unfortunately

I never put any stickers on even when I had halogen lamps. I only used to drive on motorways in the EU and just lowered the lights all the way on the internal switch
