12volt boot socket

Featured Replies

Has anyone fitted a 12volt boot socket and if so how easy is it?

Pretty straight forward. Fused live from the fuse box run up the drivers side and earthed locally.

How do you live feed at the fuse box? I haven’t anything like this before, but thanks for the advice.

There is a permanent live and ignition live (depending on what you want) in the back of the fusebox that you can connect to.

I want an ignition live to run a small portable fridge, I have never done this before, so any advice would be appreciated.

Remove the lower dash trim

Remove the sill trim

Remove the boot side trim (if that’s where you want to install it)

Remove the fusebox and unclip the rear cover.

You can either connect to the ignition live bus bar in the fuse box or the real nice way to do it is insert a proper terminal for the fusebox so the fuse goes into a factory location.

Run the wire behind the trims securing as you go.

Mount the socket and connect an earth wire to a suitable earthing point locally.

Connect the live to the socket

Refit trims

Insert fuse and test.

Many thanks, are all the spare fuses positive?

Erm, well none are negative ;)

Some will be permanently live, others will be ignition switched. A multi-meter will confirm.

Thanks but unfortunately I haven’t got a muti-meter, however I want a ignition live, have you any idea of fuse box number?

If your going to tackle this then disconnect the battery before playing with the back of the fusebox.

As this is new to you (no experience of car electrics), then I recommend getting in touch with the local Auto Electrician that I pointed you to in reply to a previous question.

I believe fuse 26 is for the rear 12V socket (your handbook will confirm) this is a permanent 12V supply. You can buy the correct terminal to plug into the fuse box in this position from HERE it is the one on the bottom right that you will need. I fitted a 12V socket in the back of my car last week using one I got out of the back of a Mk4 Golf at the scrappies and it took me just over an hour.

Thanks, do you know what terminal plug I need?

THIS ONE is the one I used on my fuse box or I believe VW part number 000979227 will also fit

Wouldn't it be easier just to fit a cigarette lighter plug to the (12v?) fridge and use it from the cabin socket?
