Just had timing belt changed - now there’s an oily smell from exhaust

Featured Replies

Had the timing belt changed on Friday now there’s a oily smell from the exhaust that wasn’t there before.

Could the diesel timing be incorrectly set or is it this a normal occurrence after such a bit of work? I had the engine bay cleaned as it was a bit dirty after the work incase it was spilled oil burning off but no change. Then I noticed it was coming from the exhaust.

I thought the car car was lacking power slightly by I think that was my paranoid imagination.

I’m taking it back to the garage tomorrow (29/7) to ask them about this. The smell isn’t terrible but as the car is a taxi I can’t have passengers breathing in oily diesel fumes. Also worried about random emissions testing.

There was some spilled diesel from the fuel filter when mine was changed by a main dealer, however it wasn’t much.

It was noticeable for 2 days but no more.

I would check with the dealer as if you think the exhaust smells oily, it might be worth checking to make sure timing etc is spot on.

Thanks. It’s vanished now. Everything seems fine. I’m sure I’ll know by the next MOT and the emissions if everything is okay

What mileage has your's done?

Mines on 55K & there's conflicting advice on when it should be changed.

Thanks
