Fabia HTP replacement engine?

Featured Replies

Hi, I think my 2009 Fabia HTP has had it: I bought it second-hand with 34000 and a FSH; however, the timing chain and valves had both been recently replaced. It became very evident soon afterwards that the engine was consuming a LOT of oil: 1l  every 150 miles. My local mechanic found poor compression in the cylinders, a lot of blue smoke at 3000+ rpm and suggested I get rid of it/ scrap it.

Anyway, before I make that decision, I thought someone might have some advice about / experience of buying a replacement second-hand engine. I can't afford a reconditioned one and I'm wary of buying a second-hand one as it seems rather a large risk to take with rather a large amount of money (£750+ I'm quoted online). And, on top of that, it from reading the threads here it's not at all unusual for HTP engines to have timing chain problems.

Any thought welcome!

Why on earth was the chain and valves changed on such a "low mileage" engine? It had FSH after all. Was it done before you purchased it?

Sounds like some very dodgy history, if you bought less than 6 months ago from a trader/garage/dealer you would surely be protected under the Consumer Right Act.

No, you are wrong, chain related failures are rare on mk2 HTP engines and usually associated with extreme lack of regular oil/filter changes or wrong oil used.

You are probably confusing this with 1.2 tsi engines (2010-2012) or very early Mk1 fabia engines (2000-2003)

Should be plenty of good HTP engines to be had from accident write offs, but you need to know how to spot a good one.

Thanks for reply.

Yes, all very odd. I just don't know why this happened is the short answer, but the chain and valves were replaced before I bought the car.

Thanks for the clarification between HTP and TSI.

Good to know that there are plenty of HTP engines to be had; spotting a good one is definitely key. Any pointers there?

You need someone knowledgeable to inspect any candidate engines. No easy way really.

Did you buy the car from a private seller?

If not, you are covered by the Consumer Rights Act

Hmm... Thanks, Xman.

I bought the car from a private seller. My mistake.

I'll speak to a mechanic I know and see whether he can find something for me.
