Steering noise inside cabin mk2

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am experiencing some strange noise under steering when it is hot outside. When turning slightly on right i can hear a noise coming from stering, almost sure it comes from inside cabin. On times, you can even feel sterring turning a little bit harder when it is hot outside. Is there any rubber/bearing inside that holds steering...? During winter, you cant hear anything. Never. This was happening last summer as well but i cannot ignore it anymore. Yesterday after turning a wheel quicky, noise was just like leaking baloon. Brrr. But usually noise is like ia ia ia (turning left and right quickly)

Possibly strut top mounts or the rack motor I’d say.

Almost sure i can hear it from the cabin inside. Even when car is switched off and turning a wheell by inch you can hear a squezing noise. So rack motor should not be a problem. I really hope soo.

Is there anything under steering wheel plastic inside that could produce a noise or rubering against something.

We just had our clock spring fail on a 2012 1.6 TDI Estate. Though the issue was easy to identify due to airbag light coming on and loss of horn, e.g all steering controls. Though the noise made didn't sound like a leaking balloon ......

@Mevden - Yes, the upper column bearing is inside the cabin.

The other possibility could be that your PAS fluid is low (hydraulic or electro-hydraulic systems).

There isn't any hydraulic fluid on the MK2 Octavia as it uses electro-mechanical power steering :)

This is true, mk2 has electric system. I will have a look where sterring stick goes from cabin outside to the rack. Maybe there is some rubber at the back of the padals.
