1.2 HTP engine & general Mk2 advice please

Featured Replies

So we have finally let Christine our mk1 1.4 16v Fabia go.

My good lady wants a new car, so after looking around at the Jap stuff and having a test drive in a VW up and nearly buying a Citigo!

She has decided she wants a proper solid car around her, so back to the Fabias but Mk2 this time.

I want to find out a bit more about the 1.2 engines, I know they are 3 cylinder which is out of my knowledge base!

What to look out for, any weak spots with that engine and generally any niggles or problems on the MK2s?

Hopefully going looking at couple of them today.

Thanks in advance.

Looking at a 1.2 HTP SE on Thursday 15th August.

Any advice from the MK2 brigade??

Cheers P

Sorry, just seen this. I've had a 12 valve 1.2 htp (70 bhp) for about 3 years now and covered roughly 50,000+ in that time. The engine is lovely and will handle everyday motoring comfortably as long as you don't overload the car, but you will need to use the gearbox as the power comes in at a low 3000 revs. There is usually just me and my partner in mine. It handles motorways okay but not the most comfortable on them. Check for a full service history! Also a gearbox bearing went on mine a year ago which cost just over £1000 to put right. I was told it can be a problem with these boxes so listen out for a whine in 2nd onwards. Otherwise just the usual issues to look out for. Good luck.

That’s brill Phil thanks for the advice. Off to have a look at one tonight.

I will have a good listen to the gearbox.

Thanks again Paul
