2.0 TDI DSG 4x4 high mileage reliability advise

I'm considering a Superb next time around and wondered if people on here have done high miles in the current generation, what if any significant parts have needed to be replaced ... turbos, DSG box, transfer box, ancillaries, major electrical etc etc

 

When I say high I mean well over 100k and in what time period

 

Have you gone for the circa 20k service intervals ?

 

So long a VAG car with similar drive train feedback on similar cars welcome too

Should be capable of high mileage 100k, providing everything is properly maintained, don’t go thinking you can stretch servicing, and fluid / oil changes especially on things like DSG, haldex etc by waiting few thousand extra miles.

 

Are you looking at 4x4 because you live in mountains with poor roads, or because you like giving it welly for fast getaway in wet.    Or is it you mistakenly think the 4x4 system with factory fit summer tyres is better in the winter than the 2wd version with appropriate tyres.  Yes changing tyres costs money, ( but the extra initial car cost, extra fuel and additional servicing of the all wheel drive costs even more money).

 

There are are plenty of very high mileage (150k) Octavia Scouts as Rapid response vehicles (similar running parts) so big mileages can be done, but you will find these will have had regular full servicing, not stretched service and inspection.

I currently have a petrol 4x4 DSG Golf with 151k+ on it

 

I do spend a reasonable amount of time on poor quality wet/muddy narrow lanes that I think the 4x4 is worth it. 

 

Yes I do take your point about proper winter tyres, I keep looking at them, but have never been able to pull the pin on them but might with the next car as I will be keeping it for at least 10 years

 

It's still going and I do 10k oil changes and dsg/haldex when required

 

Apart from the usual consumables inc the odd broken spring it has been pretty reliable apart from new DSG box at 125k (ouch!) , water pump, a complete ecu connections cleanup and a full set of small oil seals to cure some 'sweating'. Things like CV gaiters, holes in rads etc I would put down to consumables/bad luck

 

Fingers crossed it will get to 180k-190k in the next 2-3 years and then I will seriously consider a replacement

 

Mines a non turbo and turbo reliability on here seems to vary between 80k-100k and forever

 

Just doing some fact finding at the moment :)

Your fact finding on turbos seems to be a bit off. Where do you get the 80,000 - 100,000 figure?

 

What 4x4 Golf DSG do you have just now?

80k-100k Just looking around here and other forums for a general feel .... Of course forums by their nature only tend to bias toward the negative

 

Stock 2006 R32

I have found (and have been driving 100,000kms a year for the past 20 years) that turbo's will normally only last between 150k kms and 200k kms........no matter what car they are in.

I almost consider them a consumeable!!!

What average total mileage do you put on each car ?

 

What other significant items have you had to replace in the lifetime of the car ?

 

Are they all VAG cars ?

Wheel bearings, brake discs, drop links, suspension bushings, EGR valves, alternators, air con pumps, Xenon bulbs.........etc etc

 

If you plan on putting 2 or 3 or 400,000 miles on a car, these type of thing just wear out/fail with high mileage.........they are not designed to last that long.

 

I put 500,000kms on my last car (Volvo S80) and 650,000kms on the one before that (Octavia 2.0tdi DSG)

And obviously, motorway miles are much easier on a car.

The good thing is you have not mentioned DSG gearbox or the timing belt snapped before it was due a change or thrown a rod etc or anything else really significant

 

Do you live 200k from work or work in sales ? you must spend 5 hrs a day in the car ?

 

I see you had a Volvo, have you had any of the other so called premium brands and is the reality of their parts and service costs significantly different to VAG mainstream brands ?

Yeah, I have a little wholesale/Distribution company......and I'm the only rep (all of Ireland)

 

I was amazed by the DSG in my Octavia. The car had a DMF replaced early on.........but that was a service campaign by Skoda, it didn't fail. I spotted the car a year after I sold it , with 650,000kms on it, still driving around Dublin. I would say the gearbox only had 2 oil changes!!!!!

 

The Volvo was more expensive to maintain....the simple basic stuff was just that little bit dearer.  Just before I got rid of it, I had awful trouble with the window/headlight washer system and I threw a lot of money at that (a car is useless without these working properly)

 

It will be interesting to see how my 190 DSG fairs with the mileage..........I got it in April with just below 50,000kms on the clock and I have 92,000 on it now. I have that rattling/buzzing in the upper dash when the engine is under load......it's doing my head in......it's due a big service in a few weeks, I'll see can they do anything about it.
