Steering rack diy - Vcds required?

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

I’ve been slowly working my way through my latest Octavia, a 2007 Vrs diesel with many miles. Part of the suspension refresh was to look at the play in steering the car has. It appears to have a dead spot in the centre and play when rocked from side to side, I had hoped it was track rods and ends however it’s the rack, loads of noises and movement up, down and sides from inside the rack.

SO....

I’ve ordered a refurb unit from GSF and I’m happy enough that I can physically fit it to the car as I’ve replaced racks in other cars. I’m happy to take some tips if you have any.

My question is - What needs done once it’s fitted? I understand it’s electric and I’m sure something needs plugged in and configured but I’m not sure what.

Also, I presume you can’t remove the electric parts and swap them from one rack to another to work around anything needing plugged in and configured?

thanks in advance.

@Frazzly - I think that's characteristic of electro-hydraulic PAS. I know my Mum's Jazz has a dead spot around straight ahead that is just plain not there on my Octy 1 with a simple hydraulic system.

Thanks ken - tbh I could live with the dead spot however it has a lot of play so needs replaced anyway

To help anyone else out in the future.

I took the part number from the rack on the car and got a replacement refurbed part with the same part number. I believe it was from a VW Touran.

It wasn’t too bad to fit, did it in three hours myself, on the driveway.

Once fitted the car threw a yellow then red steering wheel light however I turned it from lock to lock and it cleared the warnings and worked like a dream 👍

no coding required it appears

Ken, please correct me if I am wrong but I thought all Mk2 are all electric PAS with no hydraulics. But I do agree with you that the Mk1 has better steering than the Mk2.

Mine was certainly an electric rack only.
