Battery management system

Featured Replies

Or whatever its called, the thing that will turn off your interior lights etc after a certain time/below a certain battery voltage if you have left a door open, a dodgy microswitch etc.

Is this supposed to turn off the parking lights before the battery becomes terminally discharged?

Muppethead left his turned on last night and had a dead flat battery this morning, 6 volts only and I believe if it falls under 10.6v the battery is shagged, this was a brand new Bosch silver series bought only 6 months ago :worried:

Should it have protected it?

Will the battery definitely be knackered?

It has taken a charge and will start the engine, tomorrow I will disconnect the injector loom to give it a proper cranking test, are there any values that it should maintain? Minimum voltage after so many minutes of cranking?

I have never been happy with the cell voltage of this battery, after a charge or being driven it drops immediately to 12.4 volts, its 5 + year old predecessor will maintain 12.7 volts a couple of months after being charged.

It still seems to be sitting at 12.4 volts so maybe it has survived?

Any knowledgable peeps?

My first thoughts if it was faulty would be claim on the guarantee as it really should last longer than 6 months - no matter what!

If the battery really does get damaged by falling below that threshold then the fault is mine.

Its starting the car at the moment, will try a crank test tomorrow.  my load tester is in the UK.

bought it from the Battery megastore but the French warehouse, they are quite switched on with their warranty replacements, firm but fair, I can either pay for an independant garage to test it in which case they will send me a new one on appro till they recieve mine or I send mine off and trust them, which I sort of do to a degree.

The cost of transporting anything here in France is prohibitive for an individual so I would need to be certain that it is measurably deficient and that they will accept it or its a lot of money spent for nothing.

I dont really feel good about a supplier paying for my mistake but maybe this talk about then being killed if dropped below 10.6v is just talk, I know that they have a threshold figure, any battery with a cell voltage beneath X volts they will not accept as a return as according to them its proof of misuse.

This American site explains the sulphation process that occurs when over discharging a lead acid battery.

For your case it says you should be able to recover the battery by using a slow charger but the battery will have reduced life and reduced cranking performance.

My experience with over discharged standard lead acid batteries in industrial equipment is they usually die sooner than expected due to sulphation shorting out one cell.

Thanks for that, I debated using my conditioner charger or the faster 6 amp charger and chose the latter.

Currently at 12.2v on its quiescent state, I have a little LED readout that I can see through the window without opening a door and waking up the canbus etc.

I would rather see 12.7v after 18 hours since driving but this new battery has always had a low cell voltage, it might be 0.1v lower than before the flat battery but nothing significant, will try the cranking test later.
