I'm doing a Walkie!

Featured Replies

Lets clear that up before the mis-quote engine fires up! After following Walkies "roadster" threads with much interest, I too have decided to get myself a fun car.

However, unlike Walkie mine will be to compliment the vRS, not to replace it. Hence, I have quite a small budget. I have

If I had a few thousand to spend on a fun open topped car it would be a Honda CRX / Del Sol like this one (but not this specific car). http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Honda-CRX-Del-Sol-Transtop_W0QQitemZ4628220979QQcategoryZ18206QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I've always liked them , you can still find decent unmolested ones and the hard top makes them cheaper to insure , but with the roof off and the back screen down you still get open top motoring.

5k would have bought you the pick up ;)

when i read "i'm doing a walkie!" i instantly got the vision of you mincing round the office with ahandbag on your shoulder singing to queen or something

Well worth a look IMO.

Get one in decent condition that hasn't had a lot of bolt-on tat thrown at it and they are brilliant looking cars. They aren't going to be quite as nice handling as the MX5 but they do go well , aren't short on power and have more luxuries than a basic mazda , and three grand buys you a first class example rather than a "scraping the barrel" mx5

I was worried about Pixi.

Ahem... I certainly won't be touching a scraping the barrel MX5... but totally understand what you are saying.

They look like a great buy, but are so few and far between :(

I don't care what anyone says about reliability, fact they are left hand drive,I like Fiat Barchettas.

MX5's are still great cars though

I like the Barchetta, i own a Fiat, so reliability isn't a problem, and my old M3 was LHD - but it is wrong wheel drive ! Based on a Punto, so that is the downside.

But an Alfa Spyder :D

For a few

I'd be looking for a westie or some other kit car.

probably what my money would be on too, nice weekend/track day car

The thing will purely be used for weekend fun, but insurance for me is still a killer, 21, 2 accidents, no NCB :( Anything more than about Gp15 is out of the question.

Also, the roads round here are on peat, and are very undulating, hence I need something with fairly forgivving suspension. The MX5 seems idea.

Had a snoop about today - god there is some overpriced rubbish out there

Go look at a low price westie or kit car. Very supple, very light, quick even with a 1.6 engine, insurance is peanut especially if you go restricted mileage, they are mechanically simple (and it's good to learn on something that can be fixed with a mallet :D ), parts are dirt cheap (usually from a scrappy). Finally, it'll make you grin like a loon :D

To give you an idea, mate of mine, 25, NCB all used on main car, 2 speeding tickets, mileage restricted to 5k pa pays £142 fully comp for a 1.8 Westie :D

I think you are all missing the point here.

It's Tom, look at Tom in his 2cv...

Hurrah for Tom:D
