Hi 

I have a 65 plate 1.4 Tfsi DSG, I have just taken it to a local garage who has changed the oil with 5w-40 is this ok? some people are telling me it should be 5w-30, will this be a problem?

It would be more to the point to state the VAG 500 series standard number of the new oil than the change in hot viscosity.

I’ve just changed the oil and filter on my 1.4 tsi and all the oils listed meeting the vag spec (VW 504 00 for the 1.4), as pointed out by KenONeill, were 5w30.

VW 502 00 is also ok if you are on fixed time/distance oil changes.

 

I would say 5w30 is the better viscosity for the uk climate but I can’t see any issue with 5w40 if it meets the vag spec.

I wouldn’t be surprised if your local garage uses 5w40 engine oil from a bulk tank that meets the common vag/gm/ford specs.
