The Superb (similar to the Passat B5/3B) has some components that communicate via CAN with each other, but diagnostics are strictly non-CAN. We have seen some cases where newer Passat/Superb models (2004+) had some minor problems with VAG-COM versions before 500.0, so you it might not be a perfect idea to go the ebay/china way.
