Ball joints

Featured Replies

Hi all

Just a bit confused and asking you guys for a bit of advice

My car just went through mot with a couple of advisories . Play in l/h ball joint and tyre on sane side need replacing soon

I asked a couple of  garages if I needed to change both sides ? They both said no  just change the left hand one.  I asked if I supplied part how much ? One garage said does it come with a wishbone ? I said in the online pic it doesn't seems to have a wishbone ?

Also the mot station said it doesn't need alignment after as that's tracking?

It seems what I read online  (both should be changed as other will wear out quicker ) is dismissed by the garages ? I would've thought they wanted to make the extra money anyway?  I'm not particularly flush so what do you suggest please

@abudabi555 - Well, I've never heard of changing both ball joints just because one is worn. And it should be possible to change a ball joint without the entire wishbone.

Tyre I can't comment on definitively from what you've said, but it's possible that a worn ball joint could have resulted in rapid wear on the inside of that tyre.

I would have the tracking checked afterwards, because ball joints do affect tracking.

Thanks Ken for quickreply and favourable answer (for me;) maybe it's just to be 100% sure of everything.  To tell the truth I'll probably only have this car another 8 months or so as it's getting leggy and not in good fettle . Had a leak from sunroof so carpets were  ruined last year since remedied and back wiper not working.  Seats are saggy etc

One of the coil springs broke a month ago and although I was driving slowly maybe I knackered the joint ? I've since had them replaced obviously for safety and the mot

Cheers mate I'll go with that

Hello,

Im based in Leeds and just got my yeti back form local dealer - the sunroof drains are blocked and this has caused a water ingress into the car and they have quoted me £2,200 for new underlay / sunroof drains but also they say i have to replace the roof frame and seals!!

This is a lot of money for me so does anyone have a recommendation on someone who could offer me a cheaper solution? Any help is really appreciated guy 🙂

Cheers

I've no specific experience of yeti's, but normally on VAGs, if you open the roof there's a drain hole in each corner of the frame that is piped down to the wheel arches. Get a length of thin stiff wire and carefully clean the drains. Chances are it's just road crap in the bottom of the pipes.

Stevestruck  - thanks mate i will give that a go - i got nothing to loose!!

useful links thanks
