Stop start stop time

Featured Replies

Quick question : when the stop -start stops the engine, almost invariably it will start up again within about 30-40 seconds.  The dealer I bought it from assures me this is normal, but it seems a bit weird to me.  Why not keep the engine stopped until I need it again?  I know that there are LOADS of variables as to when it works, but it seems odd that it starts up again all the time.

SO, how long does your stop-start keep the engine stopped for please?  Will it stay stopped for more than 40 seconds?

If you are doing short journeys or there are demands on the battery such as the air con is on then the stop/start may not even activate at all. Both our commutes involve a 26 mile journey each way which enables the battery on both our cars to be running near to optimum efficency so our stop/start can keep the engine off for upto 5 minutes if necessary. Battery needs at least 95% charge to kill the engine and start it again.;)

Hmm.  It stops and starts just fine.  It just restarts very quickly.  It will never stay stopped for more than about 40 seconds.

Oh, I may have posted this in the wrong forum... whoops!  Maybe a moderator can move it to the general citigo forum?

If you have battery tender or smart charger try to charge the battery. Sound like your battery is not full enough to keep engine stopped. Most likely it restart engine because battery voltage drops too low.

Edit: Connect negative lead any other ground point than battery negative terminal. This is important because this way car recognise its battery is getting charge from external charger.

@Stonster

Is this the 2012 Citigo in your signature and is it new to you?

Best have the battery tested as it might well be needing replaced soon and if so and the dealer will not be wanting to pay to replace it or even contribute to that.

Mine will stop for around 15 minutes maybe more. Battery is 5 years old, as is the car.

Thanks all...

Yes, the car is new to me. I guess it's 7 years old but I'd hope the battery would last a bit longer than that.

Would it not expect to charge fully on a long journey? I suppose it might not hold charge very well. Suggests that it's not working right though...

Apart from the battery, are there other things that might cause this? I think I read on another post possibly the brake servo pressure sensor?

When ever my start/stop doesn't work as should it has always helped when I charge the battery with external charger.

7 year for a battery is quite long time. May not be good enough to keep voltage high enough for start/stop system.

Agreed - in seven years, a stop-start vehicle will have done far more engine starts than a standard vehicle, so this is a pretty decent battery life.

A 7 year old battery can often start the car and you don’t know you have a problem. However as we found on a Fabia some years ago it can be at 11 volts with one dead cell.

The stop start will restart the engine once the battery drops to the preset bolts.

Pretty good chance you need a new battery, unfortunately quite expensive to be compatible with stop start system

Actually, had the battery tested ok.  The garage read a fault code as brake booster pressure sensor.  Hence my next thread...

If anyone has a moment to look at a part number on top of the engine it would be really appreciated:
