Help identifying car squeal from cold (with video)

Featured Replies

Can anyone help me identify what is causing the squealing sound when the car is started from cold?

As you can hear, it quietens down very quickly, and by the time you have driven a even short distance it has gone away completely.

Not really concerned, just curious, as my Dad's 2003 Fabia doesn't do this.

Probably the auxiliary belt tensioner pulley.

could be the Alternator  pulley slipping. When the engine is cold, more than normal current is needed from the battery for the starter. The battery then asks for more current from the alternator, which increases the torque on the auxiliary belt, which may slip causing a squeal. After running a short while current taken from the alternator is less, thus the squealing stops.

So it just needs a new alternator belt then?

It needs to be diagnosed, not something we can do without the car
