Rear wiper probs

My rear wiper needs to be coaxed into proper two strokes action by flicking stalk a number of times

first strokes about two thirds of a full sweep then jerky till it decides to do a full single stroke back to start position 

occasionally it will work normally i.e. Two strokes but usually is jerky and works as above details

can it be reset or is it a motor on the way out?
