Wheels Jumping

Featured Replies

All,

I've a couple of issues creeping up on my 2007 Octy recently.

The first is the car shudders when taking off, almost as if it doesn't want to move, but taking off and tur i g at the same time the wheels seem to skip/judder. I though initially it was the clutch but I'm also getting an annoying whine but I cant tell if its front or back, it used to appear when i went around roundabouts but now is becoming apparent during normal driving.

The car has 167000 miles and is on its first clutch and all 4 wheel bearings.

Any ideas?

I'd suspect the CV joints on the front drive wheels.

See thats what I thought as ive already changed them on the fabia due to knocking, but the Octy isn't knocking and the boots are fine

Well, I'd suspect CV joints or differential too.

How do I check the diff?

I can whip off the cv joints no problem and change them they're only cheap.

The diffs that I have seen are devilishly expensive!

Traditional method is to jack and support the front end, start the engine, put it in gear, then you and a helper take it in turn to hold and observe a front wheel each. When one of you is holding their wheel the other one should turn twice as fast.

I would be very wary about recommending the above to anyone on an open forum, if the diff is damaged as we both suspect they could injure themselves, we dont know their level of competence.

I would first do the other method, car on stands, in gear but engine not running, turning one wheel by hand should turn the other in the opposite direction without any graunching or catching.

I'd check console bushes and the dogbone bush

As soon as this weather passes I'll be jacking the car up.

At least with my fabia I could see that the cv joint gaiter was in bits making diagnosis easy!!
