Diesel Fuel Injectors advice

Featured Replies

Hi Guys got an engine knock, few months ago an RAC guy parked up said to me I had a Diesel Fuel Injector knocking so i'm thinking i'm lucky he was there as not come across this fault before on any of my Diesel cars,

does anyone know how to tell which one is knocking? and any info on how to change an Injector would really help, if you seen any videos even better?

having looked they seem really expensive how have people found the refurbished parts?

thanks if you can help

Hi. You need someone with VCDS to run a scan on your engine whilst it is running and up to temp. I had this on my BKD engine - one injector was leaking/spray pattern was shot and it showed up in the injector values on VCDS as a very high reading. Also the other injectors were trying to compensate by altering their values.

My knowledgeable friend who did the diagnostics told me that PD injectors are usually very reliable as there is not a lot to go wrong with them. They either work or they don't so he advised that I take a punt on one from an ebay breakers. Cost about £40. My mate had an injector spray tester and he checked it was all OK. Got some injector seals and bolts from Darkside Developments and paid my local VAG independent garage to fit.  Cost way less than the £600 for a new injector ONLY from the dealers and that was without fitting. Total bill was around £150-170 I think.

Had a look at it today and think its clear which one it is so a mate said buy a set of seals for that one and he would show me had to fit them for a pint tomorrow.

seal kit was £18 from euro parts which I thought was quite fair

.

If only they were the injectors, life would be so easy. :D

Pd injectors are about as complicated as injectors get, they are a fuel pump and injector in one package!

am glad my mate is showing me how they come out lol

You have to take the cam cover off, and disconnect the injector rockers before you can think about removing them, its not too bad a job.

make sure you lube up the O rings and before you try and start the car I would turn the engine over without the glow plug in whichever cylinder you change, just to get rid of any diesel that will flood into the cylinder from the fuel galleries in the engine.

yea i watched a video on how they come out but my mate has a correct puller so should make light work of it

Hi Guys seems my mate let me down doing the injector seals today 😞

can anyone help please as I'm trying to work out why there is black carbon build up which really seems to be coming out from where number 4 glow plug is but I cant feel anything coming out when i put my fingers in there.

if you know anyone who knows about injectors seals or why it may be black there could you Tag them for me please as really am stuck here 😞

I have bought the injector seals they should be here monday

It's hard to tell from the pic but that looks perhaps like a slow oil leak coming from somewhere. Is it definitely not coming out from round the glow plug? If the glow plug was loose you could possibly get combustion gasses escaping past it.

You won't see anything of the injectors on a PD engine without taking the cam cover off, so whatever that black gunge is it's very likely nothing to do with the injectors or injector seals.

it was an  RAC guy parked up said to me I had a Diesel Fuel Injector knocking, it was knocking so loud 2 days ago but not its stopped again it's getting to be a strange one, what can knock and fix itself.

think i might clean that oil area and see if i can see where it starts coming from

That leak that has made its way round the corner of the engine is probably the seal on the tandem pump or the cam cover gasket, its nothing to worry about and would ignore it and let it be.

  • Author

dont think its the cam cover gasket due to where the oil is but as i having the injector seals done I will but a new one just to be safe.

it looks like its squirting slowly from somewhere opposite the glow plugs, I cant feel no blowing when i put my hand down there,

now some of you have seen it and given some advice i,m starting to think the same, whats a tandem pump? does that have a gasket?

think i,m going to go out there today with some warm soapy hot water and clean off the oil off to see if i can see where its coming from, it looks like a build up over time to me what do you think?

then there's the knocking noise that I had but just stopped again sounded like the cam was worn but a worn cam cant fix itself can it?

one think i'm thinking is that I put some redex cleaner and some turbo cleaning in it last week I,m wondering if this could of done this?

keep your replies coming please as this seems to be a strange one

I'm guessing it might have gone something like this.

One of the injectors got a bit of crud in it from the fuel, this partially jammed the injector & stopped it working over its whole stroke.

The jammed injector left a small gap between the injector & cam, this caused the tapping noise & the injector to malfunction.

You added the Redex cleaner which eventually dissolved/ dislodged the crud.

The injector was then able to operate over it's full stroke, the gap to the cam was removed & you lost the tapping sound.

Injector now functioning ok again.

That's my theory anyway.

So perhaps just renew the fuel filter with a good quality Mann filter & hope for the best.

its a good theory  PipH just it keeps coming and going again, all the redex in the fuel would be gone now and i stuck in some premium BP diesel and its stopped again but i dont think its the last i,m going to hear from it, I have bought new seals and a new rocker gasket which is going to be fitted on the 1 oct, unreal really as when it happens it's such a loud knocking

There's a lot of difference between the tap of excessive camshaft clearance & knock from a poorly performing diesel injector.

It sounds like your injector is goosed & needs replacing if the problem keeps coming back.

  • Author

well it is a bit more then I know about my garage is fine with me buying the parts and he does me a cash job so think I will start with the injector seals then take it from there, he might see what's going on when he takes them out

the tapping could be nothing to do with the injectors, could be a stuck lifter that has re-primed itself.

  • Author

it keeps coming and going could a stuck lifter do that?

  • 1 month later...

well found out what the problem is with the knocking in case anyone reads this thread.

it was the cam and the Hydraulic lifters, the the cam points were well worn down and rounded off and I had 2 holes in the 2 of the lifters.

I had the cam kit done along with a cam belt water pump kit and new oil all replaced, also changed all the injector seals seeing I had already bought them.

anyone know thats the right antifreeze to use on my car please? and how much to put in?
