Add USB socket to dashboard blank?

Featured Replies

Was wondering whether it's possible to fit a single or double USB charging socket to one of the unused areas of the dashboard in a mark 2 Fabia.

Mine has a plastic blank to the left of the heating controls (mine's right hand drive) or there are smaller blanks either side of the locking buttons in front of the gear stick.

Would there be the required spare wiring within reach if I jemmy one of these pieces off?

This is the kind of thing I was thinking of (marketed for Toyotas) but I'd look around for the right dimensions to get a reasonable fit:

Doubt there is any wiring under the ones by the lock button as thats for heated seats and they have an additional loom which won't be fitted.

But you only need a +12v supply and ground, so easy to wire in. The main issue is finding one that will fit and not look like an after thought.

This ones quite smart, adds a volt meter as well. Will have to look at dimensions and see if it fits the blanks by the lock switch, depth wont be an issue, just length and width of the face plate.

Thanks for the replies. I can't see any dimensions for those products. The one listed has dimensions and looks like the width will fit and the length will come down to the point where the blank curves inwards, so it's a bit too short without something to fill in the remaining gap and hold it in place.

OP- I had problems using several USB items from ciggie lighter and had a multi HD setup . Problem is that I keep on disconnecting the plug when I operate handbrake, so I looked on line and found these .I've opted for a round one fitted to th passenger side of the front attachment to th centre console, and wired from the ciggie lighter. But I've noticed  few other shaped sockets here that might be of some interest

Just added USB socket to mine, fitted in the area below the radio that slopes forward to the cup holders, to power my DAB radio adaptor. I took the power from the fusebox using a piggyback fuse connector off an ignition controlled fuse, which stops it being permanently powered like the standard fitted one - before this I had to unplug the USB plug from the socket to stop the DAB being permanently powered up
