Bicycle Insurance / Electric Bike Insurance.

Featured Replies

Do any of the Car / Van insurers here have a division / partnership that is offering Insurance on higher value bikes?

They can cost as much as cars, and even more than cars, but as it is Insurance i have looked at is more expensive than what i pay to insure cars.

I do undertand you easy Bikes are to steal, then to trace etc,

Also i understand the cost of the required security chains / locks required to use when you have Insurance or not.

Personally i have no insurance covering me for 3rd party claims when cycling, or theft of a bike / bikes.

There are Cycling association / club memberships that can give Insurance coverage on accident claims.

?

Anything anyone here can help with from their knowledge or experiences?

There certainly are options in the UK - both insurers who'll offer the cover direct and cycling associations where it's one of the membership benefits. Where are you based?

I believe the main suspects are Cycleguard, PedalSure and Yellow Jersey. There's also CyclePlan but I don't know much about them.

Association-wise, British Cycling has some cover for members plus member discount rates on insurance with their chosen providers.

You may have come across all these before, so I might not be adding anything useful.

Cheers, seen them all with a Google (other search engines available.)

Hoping for help on who to give more attention to from anyone with knowledge of them.

Sadly paying more to cover a £5,000 bike than a £50,000 car is just a bit off, but then theft and loss risk is high.

I've had quite a few high end bikes over the years and insured all of them for when out on training rides, racing, crashed, stolen from the car when away from my property etc etc and the best advice I can give is don't bother with bike specific insurance, that is a policy from someone who only deals with bikes.  They have your eyes out.  I've had quotes for more than double what I pay for car insurance.

IME the best thing to try is first speak to your current home insurance provider and see what 'add ons' they offer, on top of your existing buildings/contents insurance.  I've typically paid £15-20 more per year to increase the per bike cover limit and to also have insurance away from my property, including theft and damage.  IIRC a like-for-like quote with Pedalsure was well over £500 and that was with a BC gold/race membership.   I've done this with both RBS and Tesco home insurance providers.

As for 3rd party liability and such, take a look at the membership packages from British Cycling; something like the Ride package should suffice.  I did use BC once to make a claim after I was hospitalised due to a wuck fitt who reversed over me whilst I was waiting at traffic lights (true story), the 3rd party firm they employed were a PITA to deal with but I was awarded £800 which just about covered the cost of my front wheel, damaged levers, bar tape, shoes and bib shorts but it was better than nothing.
